My winter wheel setup with pics
Finally got my winter tires mounted on my winter wheels and thought I'd test mount them for fitment and take some pictures. They are off again and in the garage waiting for winter
Here is what they are... Avant Garde M510 with a satin black powder coat in a 19x8.5 ET15 square setup. Nokian Hakapellita R2 winter tires (only the best for the M4 ) in a 255/35-19 size. Bought the wheels from Need4Speed (Golan) who is a vendor here. Great pricing, amazing service and very helpful. A+ experience that was super painless. Ignore the wheel gap... I didn't drive the car far enough to settle the suspension after lifting it (just backed it out of the driveway). Fitment is perfect and flush. The wheels do not stick out at all (I hate that). To be honest, I almost like the look of these more than the OEM wheels (the pics don't do them justice with the lighting). Not bad for a winter set up... great looking wheels and fantastic snow/ice tires Sorry for the dark and crappy iPhone pics.

I'm so glad I don't have to drive my car in the winter..... That's a good looking winter set though!

I find wheels with spokes that extend all of the way to the outer edge of the wheel look big. They look REALLY nice in person.

Besides, I don't keep my cars long enough for the winter beating to matter

This car is difficult to find winter options that work so I thought it would help those folks starting their search.

So I guess most 19s with the proper offset will work with no problem?
Unlike the 18s where they may not clear the caliper pins even though the offset is correct? |

I wouldn't put 245/40/18 on 10" wide wheels.

What minimum size would you recommend?

255 would be the narrowest tire I would even think about running on a 10" wheel. Even then it will be stretched. 265 is better.
What's even better is get a narrower winter wheel... 8.5 or 9" and then put the tire size you want 245 or 255 on and it will work well.

Thanks! I would like to stick with the 513M wheels if possible. It looks like Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 is not available in 255/40/18 or 265/40/18. The Blizzak LMs are available in 255/40/18 but not anything higher.

I've just mounted Blizzak LM-60's in 255/40/18 square on the 513M wheels. The rears do looks ever so slightly stretched, but look fine. I won't be using them till November/December so can't tell you any more than that.

It would be great if LM 60s would work. I also noticed that tirerack has Michelin PA2 in 265/40/18 but I don't know if they are as good as the LMs for snow/ice.

The PA2 are dangerous, relative to the LM-60, in those conditions. I sold a set of PA3 only 2 months after buying it because they were the worst tire I had owned in wet snow or ice. Great on cold, dry roads... horrible in really poor conditions.

Thanks. I saw your detailed review of the PA3s as well. Very informative. Looks like I might have to get a set of aftermarket wheels or go for the BMW winter package. My car arrives on Tuesday and all I can think of is winter tires! I am going to just forget about the winter for a couple of weeks and just enjoy the car

Blizzaks on 513M
I bought these tires on Tirerack too as they were on sale. I saw this pic and read that they will work. Glad to hear they look ok.

I see the majority of you are heading in the direction of a square setup with 255/40R18 or 255/35R19.
I was considering getting 255/35R19 and 275/35R19 Blizzak LM-32's and use them on the OEM rims. |

That look awesome. I never got the idea of having a car as a dd and only driving it during the non winter months lol. I drive my car in snow, sleet. rain, shine, i dont care. Ive never done the winter tire setup and always took the risk. But to be honest this year im going to do it right. I love your setup. Might either do the same or go with an 18" wheel. Are blizzaks the best winter tires?
