Tire wear

For all those who have driven their new M3/4 for a couple of thousand miles already - how is your tire wear? I have been pushing mine quite a bit (for 1,800 miles), but all in the city, so its all in short bursts, and the tires still look almost new.

Using normally, these tires last a while since they have 300 treadwear rating.

PSS were pretty astounding on the M5. A track weekend will crush them (with 4400lb M5 heft), but with hard street driving folks were racking up 12-15k miles plus.

I put a new set of PSS's on my S4 in May'13 before a full track day at VIR (south course). I'm impressed with how well the tires have worn. Definitely need a new set, which has been priced in to my trade... A lot less road noise vs. the Conti's I previously had.

Mine are done... abt 7k was what it took. And it most certainly was not the fault of the tires.

well.... I figure the front ones could last an other set of rears so I'm thinking of getting 2+4 set.

I told my husband that my tires are getting renewed for free, they were faulty set. He wanted to believe me, and I didn't want more shit about my beloved Peter.

Also, tuning parts are going to be a gift from X, still haven't decided if father Christmas or someone else is getting the bill with those.

Marriage to a non car dude: lying becomes a hobby.

My crystal ball says Peter is going to need new shoes pretty often.

So, let's help Lups come up with some more excuses why tires are not lasting long:

1) Darn it, second set were faulty too!
2) BMW must have chosen tires based on EU spec roads - these Michelins wear out faster on American asphalt
3) Looks like the odom-a-limiter app is working like a charm - only half the driven miles are getting registered!

That should hold ya for a little while!

Did they work for you? In my case, I think he's just really happy not to know. He has this funny little look when the kids rat me out he uses.

"So, what did you do today boys?"

"First we ate, then we had milk. Mum made us go to the shower, and then we got dressed and then we were so good at the dog park, we learned so many words in English, that we got doughnuts!!"

"Really, what are they (He knows pretty well I'm a food nazi)?"

"Mum hunted us a really good empty parking lot and showed us how funny it is when the car goes funny."

Then comes the look that says we will talk about this later, and I remember just then I need to get some milk/socks/ dog food...

Still, the boys said I'm the best since I know about frogs. I'll make them buy me rubber when they are old and making a shit load on research on those green slimy things.

Darn Lups, even for you I had a tough time understanding that one....

I expect 20-25k on the front and 12-18k on the rear, but the difficult thing is it is SOO easy to spin the rear a little bit in just everyday driving. It's not even drifting, smoking, or hard sideways action that I think will wear these suckers - it's the fact that a solid stab of the throttle makes them stutter-step and grab.

So just curious what is everyone expecting to spend on tires yearly or every two years? Do you guys mainly go to dealership, tire shops, or tire rack?

Dude I have mad skills. Autocorrect helps always, since I don't see text as letters I see them in a way as pictures. Dyslexia is a bitch.

They were! As a thanks for being a good mum I was given the order to go get some furniture to the house. At least he knows how to punish me.

I expect to get more bad sets. There is a nice site in the lovely internet which will have all my money forever. I think its a good deal, since I don't like money, but I love my personal road map I keep painting all over this boring area.

No way you get anywhere near 18k out of the rear tires. My AWD S4 with a 60/40 rear sport diff barely gets 12k, and those tires get rotated back to from and vice versa.

While I appreciate your opinion, my opinion is more valid

My experience is with an e39 m5 running 275/35/18 and 100% power through the rear, weighing about 500 pounds more than my m3 but about the same as your S4, and I got 15k miles out of my rears in MY style of driving.

So, given the weight differential and the fact the M3 runs a slightly taller 275/40/18 rear tire, but accounting for the fact the M3 puts down significantly more torque, I'm expecting 18k miles to be a good run out of the rear tires and 15k to be the minimum.

P.s. All of this is premised upon the Michelin PSS on the M3 being the same as I've run on my e39 m5. Obviously the compound for the BMW-F80 specific M3 PSS might be softer and wear faster.
