On the track without an oil cooler?

Will it work out? Ambient temps will be in the 80's. Or will I limp in 10 mins? Was hoping to negotiate a oil cooler retrofit, but it doesn't look so good through my dealership. I really don't feel like forking out $3K to get the Dinan cooler either.

i do tracking without oil cooler. It still at 250 degree. unless if you are planning to do very long trip at 110 degree across the country. I would not recommend it.

He must have an AT since all MT cars had oil coolers I think.

DrDomer, what is your level of experience? If you are very advanced you may have trouble without the oil cooler. My suggestions would be to run a bottle of Red Line Water Wetter and to avoid shifting at the rev limiter. The car seems to go very lean at the top and thus probably runs hotter when you spend a lot of time close to redline. Thanks to the car's broad torque band, there is no great reason (especially in a school) to shift that high.

Also make sure to run the event with fresh oil in the car.

I am a novice. But I've driven 335i AT sedans through a HPDE, and I really had a great opportunity to push my limits as a driver. The car's oil temp got to 280F, but the car was retrofitted with an oil cooler. The instructor's car got to 295F, because he did some extra hot lapping afterwards (basically to show off). Since I, as a novice, could push an AT with oil cooler to 280F I am a little worried. Also, we will be on the full track 3.5 miles vs half track 1.6 miles. Also, we will have almost unlimited time on the track, vs the HPDE where I got about 15 laps, my race partner had 15 laps. You guys still think I'll be ok? I really don't want to ruin the day with limp.

I am sorry, but I really don't think you will escape temperature related problems. Two thoughts here...scale your aggressiveness back a touch or get an oil cooler. I personally would not go to the track without an oil cooler. You want to go and just have a good time without worrying about the car more than necessary.

If I was in your shoes, I would bite the bullet and get the Dinan cooler.

I would not go to track without an oil cooler either..with an oil cooler I was hitting over 285 degrees..yes, I am an instructor and definitely push my car..but still...not worth risking.

BTW, no need to totally rev the car to rev limiter guys...in any gear...I have hit the rev limiter in other cars..my miata race car for example..but with this car you dont need to go all the way up to that level of revolutions.

You're going to spend about $1000+ worth of parts if you want an oil cooler for your BMW. It's going to consist of the external oil cooler, 2 oil cooler lines, new oil filter housing, oil cooler thermostat, probably a new fender liner, and mounting hardware, o-rings, etc.

2 weeks ago I spent half an hour making a parts list for a BMW N54 engine oil cooler. List price it came out to be $1200-$1400 and thats for parts alone.

Get the part numbers from the following links that are in bold then call a BMW Parts Dept. for prices.

Engine Oil Cooler and Lines

you will need items 1-11

Oil Filter Housing and Thermostat Housing
You're going to need items 1 and 9

And a fender liner if necessary

Dinan Oil cooler kit and the factory one are the only options you have unless you want to go custom.

Or wait till next year for other companies to come out with their own kit.

Mind you though that whichever kit you get, you're going to need a new oil filter and thermostat housing.
