Worried about aftermarket wheels
Hello everyone,
I know many people post about this but I felt there were no direct answers on the safety of one's transfer case when using 19 inch wheels. I am currently running a square oem 17 inch setup. I am planning on buying a set of 19 inch rims with tires. The exact specifications are as follows: Front: 19X9 ET 35 235/35/ZR19 Rear: 19x10 ET 38 265/30/ZR19 The tires are hankook ventus v12. Now I am confident that this setup won't rub, at least not on stock settings and I am also aware that the tires need to have a rolling diameter within 1 percent of each other which I believe these tires have. In theory, this setup should work perfectly, but I have heard stories from workers at the dealership and also a couple people online that no matter what, the transfer case is a problem with x-drives and aftermarket setups. In one scenario, a member of this form posted an almost identical setup as posted above except with 19x8.5 and 19x9.5 and his transfer case was shot remarkably quickly after installation. If anyone could help provide me a clear answer on the issue of running after market rims or redirect me to a post where this exact issue has been tackled, that would be appreciated immensely. Thanks in advance! |

The AWD cars came from the factory with staggered wheel setup as an option. I have been running the common staggered 18" setup on my 09' 328iX since the day I brought it home with absolutely NO problems (I currently am @ 43k miles). I use the square 17" setup it came with for winter, & the staggered 18" setup for summer... More than problems with the AWD, I would be more concerned running 19" wheels, with the very short sidewall tires, on the shitty roads we drive on every day

i was worried before also before i decided to buy wheels with staggered set up! i did my research and from what's everyone is saying as long as you have the same rolling diameter you'll be fine.

If you are really that worried about it just run a square setup.

Your question isn't any different than the multiple questions posted before. They directly address the AWD system as well. Your setup is within the 1%, the rears are basically .9% shorter so it's fine. There is less than .2" difference in overall diameter. That's less than the difference you could have from 1 set of worn tires on a square setup. You will be fine. If someone actually blew up their transfer case, the tire setup didn't do it. Going to 19"s has no impact on the transfer case. Going to staggered 19"s has no impact on the transfer case if you size tires correctly.
But if all of the searches you've done with similar situations isn't sufficient to alleviate your concerns, maybe you just shouldn't do it... |

Thanks for the quick and very affirmative responses. I guess I was just being over cautious.
It also appears that this issue has been tackled before and I did not research it enough before posting. Thanks for the responses anyhow. I will definitely be getting new rims. Not sure if I can close this thread or an admin has to but at any rate I got my answer. |

Just a heads up im running staggered wheels on my XI and I threw off my transfer case and it was not cheap to fix. I let the rears get to bald and it jumped out of the 1%. Setup was 19x8.5 et35 19x9.5 et38 235/265

I am running the setup you are planning on using .. 235/35/19 265/30/19 and like you said all that matters is the rolling diameter. I haven't had any problems at all, im not a wheel/tire guru so idk if there is a downside in terms of performance but my cars great with that setup with dws tires.. love the look of 19s but like someone said keep the sidewall in mind.. in jersey I haven't had any problems so far
