Is there a recommended procedure for running the m4 in from new?

Yes there is. Don't remember the exact procedure but basically limiting top speed, keeping the RPMs below a certain range, etc.
Search for the details.

In addition to the above, don't sit at the same RPM for extended periods i.e. Long freeway drives. Drop a gear or two and move it around
