Technical Question: Cold Start
In the old days you had to start your car, let it idle for a few minutes and then you could go. This was a sure way to keep your car running for many years and just generally good practice, but I think there was also a mechanical reason for it.
In recent years this "requirement" has gone away with modern technology and changes to car design. What about for my M4? Should I let it run for a bit before I leave for work in the morning or should I start it and go?

Normally you'd have a solid point , but actually we can get a few moths of F 30.s to 40's especially as we did over last winter-spring. Even had a few days in the upper 20's - Austin with that little added elevation even more so. But bonus is pretty much all year driving conditions great (especially for my bike!) except when the odd hurricane comes to visit!!

When I think of Texas, I think of sweaty cowboys burying their latest victims from a gun fight/accident. Now I'll make sure they have at least once in a while coats with them! I'm without coffee, as can be read from this. Situation will be handled in the next few minutes.

I know two people who don't drink any ever. I'm just waiting for them to start a career as mass murderers or something, that's just too freaky!

Well, born and bred in Ireland (dual citizenship) and have worked in -55F in northern Canada but yeah I'll stick to calling that cold - all relative my friend . Do get a laugh though from us 'northerners' when beating our chests about degrees of cold and yet we live in Houston

Warm-up
The conventional wisdom is that, at idle, especially when the engine is cold ambient, idling briefly (5-10 seconds) and then a slow drive off is recommended. Placing the engine under light load increases oil pressure and oil circulation and warms the engine more quickly. Idling for too long, especially if you have an automatic start, is particularly bad. The low oil pressure and minimal oil circulation at idle isn't helping matters of longevity. Hence why taxi cabs are considered "severe service."

The only thing you don't want to do is start it and immediately take off at full throttle and high boost. The oils needs to get somehwat warm to flow nice and free through the turbos.
