Guys i tried searching for a replacement dry high flow air filter and had no luck. Does anybody know if the 328i filter fits the diesel?

Just thought i would share what i found. It seems the AFE and K&N 320i, 328i, and 320d are the same so it should fit the 328d like a glove. More info on the bottom right of this link:

Question arises as to whether it matters if you use the BMW OEM filter or the one you listed?

This one is beyond my ken of knowledge.

I think there is no greater love than the one for the OEM, obviously in this case BMW. When OEM is not available, or when knowing it will never be available one must respect that and go with an alternative manufacturer/brand or don't drive at all.

Air flow and its measurement is quite important in the newer generation diesels. OEM only - a diesel can can get all the air it needs, but disturbances in the intake track can cause problems.

In my opinion the high flow filter does not play a role for N47. Bandwidth regular filter is sufficient for this engine.

I doubt it. Def cant feel anything with a filter upgrade.

Ah okay. So will you recommend us to go for it? Is it worth the investment? Any other performance mods planned?

They are cheap - worth it for some more turbo noise IMO.

I have a RaceChip, haven't really run it yet tho.

Thanks! Will order it in that case... Was planning for a custom catback exhaust from a local tuning house in India but since you're saying that just changing the air filter will increase the turbo noise I feel mating it with the exhaust might make the car too loud for a diesel.

PS: This is how the custom catback exhaust from Autopsyche sounds on the N47

I'm not interested in a louder exhaust - it's fine stock for me :-)

"High flow air filter." Show me the dyno results first. I doubt you'll see anything. I'd also like to see how much additional dirt a different filter would pass. Companies like K&N and such would go broke if some truth in advertising laws were applied to them.

I called up Bimmerzone.com to order my BMC Drop-In filter since their prices beats everyone.
Check their site to see if there's a dry one for 328d.

I bought one from a BMW dealer in MD via the internet. I paid $44 for the thing. BMW would have changed it for free at 30K miles, but I've never liked to go that long between changes. I also like to change the cabin air filter yearly. The charcoal-impregnated cabin filter cost $39. It's a bugger to change, BTW. It is hard to reach way back under the passenger foot well.

As it turned out I could have gone the extra 10K on both filters. Neither was what you would call dirty. Next time I'll know. I checked the Mann Filter web page and their prices weren't much different from the Genuine BMW (mine uses Mahle, BTW) discounted filter price. I want a filter that cleans the air. Not some filter that makes an empty promise of more horsepower and doesn't do half as good a job of filtering. Dyno tests show that those so-called high performance filters add nothing for horsepower.

Of course you won't see anything, anyone who thinks a drop in filter is going to boost HP is a lunatic. At best you MIGHT see better throttle response from the extra air on tap (no choking out at higher RPMs when air/fuel struggles to keep up with demand) but that's not really noticeable to most people.

And yes, one needs to make the connection between HOW more air is going in and realize the only way that is possible is by having less restriction.....restriction is caused by material. So more flow means....less filter. I would NEVER use a dry drop in, and if I ever did find the need I would certainly up my oil change frequency to deal with all that extra dirt going in the motor. The wet filters such as K&Ns try to address this with their oil which will trap the dirt and wick it away so while they are more open for more flow they are "sticky" and do attract the dirt. Of course, this only works as long as the filter is kept clean and oiled. The rumor about a dirty K&N working better than a clean OEM is pure internet trash. In theory the dirty K&N would be clogged and therfore stop more dirt.....but then you have the same restriction as an OEM......and the reality is that old dirt gets forced through from the pressure and new dirt.......so you have the same restriction and more dirt.

Unless you are going with a full intake, anything other than OEM is just wasted money. And in most cases (I actually data logged and tested this on my old Mk6 GTI) even a full intake does nothing for real world power unless the engine is tuned to make use of the extra airflow.
