The price of owning a BMW without run flats...
I hit a pot hole and immediately looked at my TPS monitor. Right rear started to drop right away. Good thing I bought the tire and wheel protection. |

Sorry to hear...
Did they tire got destroyed or maybe the rim bent? If you had one of those cans that seal punctured tires would it have got you out of trouble? JC |

Did the wheel get damaged. I hit a rock and destroyed my wheel two weeks after I picked up the car.

I think it's a bent rim. I tried the tire sealant and it appeared to work, but the road I was on didn't have a safe place to pull off if it didn't hold.

I got mine through my dealership, not BMW. It covers any damage to the wheel or tire. I get four wheel touchups and four tire or wheel replacements for 3 years at no charge.

Do you think a run flat would have survived that impact? If it was bad enough to damage a wheel - highly unlikely.

That sucks. Pot holes will split the sidewall. Tire sealant won't help and a runflat would have probably suffered the same. Hopefully the rim isn't bent and you can just get a new tire.
The tire and wheel insurance seems like a good plan when you see things like this, but it depends on where you live, how often/much you drive and how likely you are to be without $250 for a new tire. I paid $1000 for mine, but I am nowhere near close to making back what I paid and my lease runs out in October. I used it once for a flat, and it worked amazingly well, but I could have self insured... |

Not sure. And I'm not positive its the wheel that is damaged. Just assuming based on previous experience with low profile tires. I'm kind of hoping its the wheel since I have the T&W protection and want it to be worth buying. Also, I let someone drive my car a couple of weeks ago and they hit a curb and scratched the same wheel.

Spare
I purchased the spare tire kit from Bimmerzone. It is supposed to ship July 7th. Unlike the tire insurance it's in the car ready to use if needed. This is especially important for my Route 66 trip next month. Don't want to take a chance of sitting in the middle of nowhere waiting for a tow.

I wouldn't hope for a bent wheel, it took 3 weeks for my wheels to come from Germany last month. You might be out of the car for a few weeks if that's the case.

Don't have it yet. Heck, car's not here yet! Just planning ahead. From a photo, it doesn't seem to take most of trunk and can tie down with bungies. Probably just use it when going out of town. Fold down rear seat helps to make up cargo room.

i destroyed 2 tires on my F30 when i didn't see a concrete island on a dark street.
if it destroyed a non runflat, it'd probably destroy a runflat. if anything runflats are stiffer walled so they MORE likely to bend rims (the wall of the tire, doesnt give as much, so its puts more pressure on the inside rim). the only thing a runflat would have done is let you not have to get out of the car and put sealant on it, you'd still have to replace a tire (which would cost double). i'm all for bmw not using runflats. theres barely any advantage to them, unless you can't change a tire. |

Your car insurance would cover the rim and may be even the tire as it's an accident.
