I do but am interested in the GT3, not the GT3-RS. The references were meant to indicate that I have no interest in any of the FI and/or AWD variants.

Reading portions of this thread made me want to crush and snort a Xanax.
"It looks like a toad" "The engine is placed in the wrong location" "I love it" "Thinking of buying the next version 911" "AWD with a 6 speed bogs off the line" wait...what? The Sport Classic. My favorite visually by far. But.. How many of these have actually sold? Champion has had their white 10' for some time now. $155,000.00 More power to the buyer of this but for about the same money you could jump into a new and well optioned turbo or a no frills turbo S for a few clams more/albeit they have just about everything important from the factory performance wise in place.

You're right, I was feeling especially stupid yesterday. Bottom line, just a personal curiosity as to why the BMW forums are infatuated with Porsche.

Because people can be interested in more than one brand. And pcars are among the best drivers cars on the market. What's not to love?

There are many P car fans on this site. There are also several P car bashers. This is the general automotive section.

To be clear, I'm am not bashing the Brand. Indeed, I recently test drove the Panamera and Cayenne to see if this is a direction I would want to go. And no knock to the many P car fans, it just sometimes seems there are more Porsche fans on the BMW forums - not just this one, than even on the Porsche boards.

To make my post more relevant to this thread:
I have a friend who came recently into a windfall. He is very determined to get a GT2 or GT3, preferably new. For some reason, he has asked me to help him decide which Porsche of the two to get. Here is the rub, he is a Porsche fan, but has never owned one, and I have zero experience except from what I've read about them. I tend toward Italian exotics... Maybe that is why I am being asked to be his "conscious" so-to-speak as I have a neutral bias toward the Porsche Brand. So, staying in the 2000ish decade, are there major differences between last gen and current gen? And what is the advantage or disadvantage between the GT2 & GT3?

I think the GT2 variants are commonly called "widowmaker" . I suspect the combination of the turbo engine, rwd and rear weight bias makes it quite a thrill ride.

^ Both are quick cars. Obviously he would need to research and drive.
With that said, the GT2 is not for the novice of any form. I have never had the pleasure of driving one but I do read alot. When the boost kicks in it is supposed to be neck snapping/tree hugging. IMO if he wants to get into a P car an 07-08 GT3 with CPO would be an awesome choice. Hope it is not his DD because they are on the stiff side. Heck, maybe he likes that...

If I could have any 911, it would be the 930. Truly epic on so many levels.

GT3 RS for the paint scheme and stick-only configuration.
Otherwise... Turbo (non-S)

The groups aren't mutually exclusive - if you joined a Porsche forum you'd discover that lots of Porsche owners daily drive BMWs. I asked for daily driver recs on a Porsche forum and the recs for BMW were pretty much unanimous. BMW is why Porsche has released the Cayenne and Panamera - they found their customers commonly owned X5s and M5s as daily drivers and wanted to keep those people "in brand."

For example: (and this is just a rough generalization from my observations on bimmer boards): Japanese Car (usually Toyota) -> BMW -> "dream car"* Porsche. * The term "dream car" is not being used in a negative context

Hilarious!
My friend's current ride is an STI. Prev gen sedan with the big wing. 30K miles and immaculate. Driving his subie had made me think about picking up one as a DD, till the wife reminded me I was too old, too fat, and well, mostly too old.

True word. I came from a Forester Turbo stick - not the STi but a WRX on stilts.

Subaru (WRX-engined) Forester -> 135i (current) -> 997.2 911 GT3/C2S (future). Closest thing to a dream car for me would be the Ghost or any V-12 Ferrari.

Cant' disagree. They've become a lot 'safer' since that one.
