What is this mysterious halo around the shadow an airplane casts on the clouds?
On yesterday's flight back to San Diego from Norfolk I saw this weird ass halo around the plane's shadow. Have any of y'all seen this or know more about it?

That's God's protection area.
I've seen the same halo appear around the sun, caused by clouds and ice crystals, similar to a rainbow.

That's produced by the refraction / reflection of light by ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.
It's your shadow with the halo around it - cool, isn't it? The internet says it's caused by ice crystals in Cirrus clouds (so far so good, but they say that's at 20,000 feet or higher - I've seen it way lower, like 4000 feet) I figure it's just sunlight through the ice crystals viewed at just the right angle for the light to split. First time I saw one, it was in the shape of a jumper with a halo around it directly below me in cloud. I remember turning left/right to get away from that phantom jumper below me so I could deploy my parachute safely, yet the guy followed. And the ground was rapidly approaching - only to realize 'oh duh it's me' |

1MOREMOD just gots nothing better to do with his laser ray guns, so he fucks with travelers. At least you don't open the shade and the shadow man is tearing the controls out of the wing

well, there's certainly worse things you could see in the clouds besides a holo around the shadow of your aircraft.

Looks more like a flying shark. Was there a tornado below?

Oddly - I agree. It just seems funnier now.
OP - I've taken pictures of this too...pretty cool. Now stop flying and spreading corona while taking pictures of coronas. NOTE: I've been on 12 flights in the last 14 days, so guess I'm part of the problem.

Engineer here, it has to do wiht the ice crystals the other guy said for refraction, but also thats the double pained polarized glass you are filming out of with a polarized glass camera to exaggerate it. It also means if you were not chosen for the rapture.
