The squishy bumper is probably cheaper to repair, and is a lot lighter, than using aluminum or some other sheetmetal. The safety come from the crash structure.

Incredible time. It was only a couple of years ago when a 7:50 was an awesome time for an almost-kinda-affordable car.

Over here in the UK the ZR1 isn't what you would call 'affordable', it's going to cost you twice the price of a GTR, at a not to cheap £109K and that's still with the steering wheel on the wrong side for over here.
