I'm also looking forward to watching this .. in IMAX.. I've been reading a bunch of WWII books (currently on "a bridge too far") .. We should never forget how tragic WWII was... the sacrifices, unknown heros, horrors and the terrible tragedy of it all..

I'm sure Hollywood's version would be eye-candy but largely be "fake history"
I'm sure nowhere in the movie will be that Hitler allowed the expeditionary force to evacuate via an order to halt else it would have been a complete massacre

We need some more good ww2 films. The Bulge, kursk, sinking of the bismark, etc. And some real not sappy pacific theatre ones too. Midway remake, guadalcanal, iwo jima, not the bs thin red line or letters home or poorly made windtalkers.

Kursk would be a great one under the direction of an old-school director..
The Russians must have made a movie about Kursk unfortunately we dont make movies when other countries did the work.. we cant glorify the Russians these days (enemy ya kno)

Not exactly. Hitler apparently delayed the attack by 2 days, likely to demonstrate to his subordinates that he was chief in command. By the time the attack resumed 2 days later, the window to completely massacre the Allied troops had closed. So, it wasn't that Hitler was magnanimous or sporting; it was an internal power play.

I don't know if the movie will mention it or not, but IMO it doesn't detract from the story. The history of wars is replete with questionable strategic decisions based on political motives.

Thats not correct..mainstream history is largely propoganda and their reasoning is meritorious of neanderthal-reasoning
as per testimony from his few surviving generals its clear the Nazi leaders wished for the war to end right there. As far as a strategic blunder I will agree as Britain had no intentions of such a thing esp under the war-leader Churchill.. the butcherer of the Boers.

Looking forward to "Dunkirk", especially the air to air part.
Another good WWII movie was "Fury", except the middle part where they eat dinner with the locals. My father served in WWII in Europe, so I think it gave me a taste of what he faced. And to those it may concern, not only did the Germans, and Hitler, make mistakes, so did the Allies. They were all human.

Actually hitler stopped the panzers at Gorings request.
Goring believed his Luftwaffe should have the glory of destroying the BEF but they failed.
During the 9 day operation the RAF destroyed 240 German aircraft

Yes this is the standard speil
we all know the victors write the history books
investigative history barely even exist
most history is "research" by bookworms basing their reference on a few older books
his surviving generals tell of a different story
and one german "military historian" approved of by the allies I would not call definitive history

a "dunkirk blunder" hardly fits into the string of strategic moves up to that point
the wermacht was quite an able force and well commanded in 40'
they would not have left 400,000 able troops on the beaches they could have EASILY smooshed if they had no other intentions
read the alternative accounts then make up your mind
some things described as fairy tales should be seen as such
its in the past anyway

No your earlier post was the standard 'spiel'.
I know a fair bit about ww2, my great grandad was a supply driver because he was to old to fight, my grandad fought in North Afrika & Italy & my mum was a teenage girl living in Ramsgate (one of the ports the little ships set sail from) & remembers the ships returning laden with allied soldiers, many with terrible wounds.
She along with similar aged girls were tearing sheets into strips for the use of dressing wounds & distributing tea.

funny how the unaccepted and rarely touted view is the "speil".. makes no sense
Sorry your ancestors had to live thru that but that does not privy them to the intentions of the high command

It'd be interesting to hear your take on why the the Germans didn't roll right up to the beach & destroy the BEF.
