Why can’t we locate the sub?

Our technology is so advanced and we can’t locate a sub on our own planet? You would think we’d have advanced sonar and can scan the ocean where it is in a matter of hours.

Anyone else surprised? I’m also wondering why the sub isn’t emitting gps or a ping to locate it

I'm pretty sure that GPS is useless under water, as is radio if the navy's use of very low frequency / long wavelength radio signals to communicate with our submarines still applies.

My guess is that the commercial/tourist submarine industry is not regulated to any international standard, so there probably isn't any requirements for black boxes, pingers, or emergency locators.....

What plane are you referencing? I’m not trying to throw about a conspiracy theory but I’m wondering what was being transported on the sub for them not being able to locate it…

That malaysian plane or whatever it was. Did they ever even find it? I mean if the sub imploded down there and fell to the bottom I doubt they will find it anytime soon.

"They" know where it is. The ELT is automatically triggered and not accessible from inside the aircraft, therefore the crew couldn't disable it.

If they were at any sort of substantial depth and had a rapid decompression event it would be like trying to find a crushed beer keg 2-1/2 miles down on the seabed. Not surprised they can't find it...

There's a lot of reasons why some things don't work like we think they would and we aren't informed/knowledgeable on the topic we tend to start theorizing. Like, there's always a scientific/logical/rational explanation. I agree with your sentiment though but I'm sure someone educated in the field would be able to tell us how it is not as easy as we may think.

They knew the general location where the Titanic was, how long did it take them to find it using very high tech side scan sonar, weeks as I recall? The Titanic is a huge target, compared to the submersible which could be a small piece compared to the debris field surrounding the Titanic. The comment about looking for a crushed beer keg might be a bit crude but likely accurate. A bit of a needle in a haystack 12,000 feet underwater on a bottom that is very rugged.

Subs like this have systems to dump ballast in emergencies and return to the surface. I suspect there has been some catastrophic failures of systems, hull or both. I hope I'm wrong and that a safe recovery is made but that is a very hostile environment, and bad things can happen very quickly.

The U.S. Navy, and other navies, have underwater listening arrays that are used for tracking submarines, but I believe they are generally designed to detect very low frequencies. I don't know if the lost sub would make such a sound. Based on my general knowledge of the ocean surveillance system, it was very good at detecting submarines moving in the general area of interest (the N. Atlantic) and less useful in other ocean areas. If the Navy knows something, I'm sure they would pass it -- perhaps in sanitized form -- to the search and rescue effort.

This has the makings of a terrible tragedy, but it is a little like going into space: Everything has to go perfectly and the price of any imperfection is catastrophic.

It's even lol'er than that. The OP asked what plane, opening the door for further discussion and then scolded a poster for talking about the plane.

...and wait, there's more! The OP claims to not want to throw around a conspiracy theory and in the very same sentence throws around a conspiracy theory.

I heard this morning this sub has a system whereby hooks holding ballast in place will dissolve after a period time. This apparently is the failsafe if something happens to the crew. Looks like it hasn’t worked unfortunately.

BTW, the plane was the MH370

you really don't want to know how aircraft are tracked over the ocean once they are outside of radio range

I watched an interview on this last night. A local newscaster went down in the sub last year. The thing is the side of a Dodge Caravan inside and controlled with an X-Box controller. It is going 2 miles down to the ocean floor and has no GPS on board (from my recollection) and it is very primitive with the controls and gadgets inside.
Did I mention it costs $250k per ride

However, I agree with todays technology its mind blowing we cant find it

GPS doesn't work underwater as there is no way to get a satellite signal.

I have two theories heavily influenced by four 8% IPAs.

1. The sub slipped through an underwater time portal and jumped back to 1912.

2. The sub is trapped in the clutches of the ghost of Jack Dawson.
