Golf general chat

Man, I went through searching and for a BMW forum you guys are surprisingly quiet on golfing. Aside from a short thread on the Master's, not much discussion.

Seeing as it's one of the only things we can currently do due to lockdown + covid this year, I figured I'd fire up a proper thread for a golf home base here. Post pics of where you're playing, talk what's in the bag, apps, whatever.

I'm currently hitting some Callaway X-20 Tours from like 2007 along with a Taylormade R7 Quad driver. I'm about a +10 handicap, but I've gone from shooting 110s down to shooting high-70s and low-to-mid 80s with these clubs. I'm looking at getting myself some PXG 0311T irons and an 0811 driver sometime in the near future as my next upgrade (to go with my soon-to-be-ordered M440).

As for current apps - I've been loving The Grint. I tried GolfShot and a few others, but kept coming back to The Grint so I subscribed to it. It's pretty slick.

Playing https://www.halfmoonbaygolf.com/ in about 8 hours when I wake up, it's basically my favorite course to play in the area.

What're you guys hitting? Shopping for? Latest deals? Discuss.

I love to play 9, the wheels start falling off my gave about 11 or 12 and it stops being fun. I'm afraid I don't take the game seriously and rarely keep score, I just enjoy the walk and play. I also enjoy the pints that go along with it.

I used to play a ton of golf back in the day, got my wife into it a few years ago and we both played more this summer than the past few. I managed 18 rounds and my wife played 11.

My handicap is around 9 at this point and the wife managed to shoot consistently in the 90-95 range this year. My putting and around the greens was great this summer my putting average for the season was 1.7. My struggle has been hitting GIR - average was 33% which is terrible.

Currently in the bag:
Taylor Made M1 Driver
Taylor Made V-steel 3 wood
Taylor Made Tour Preferred (2009) 3-PW
Titleist Vokey SW & LW
Ping Eye 2 LW (what I use out of bunkers)
Ping Answer 3 putter
Balls - Titleist Pro V1x

Been debating on a new set of irons and leaning toward Taylor Made P770s, but want to hit the Titleist T100 before I make a decision.

I’ve been using 18 Birdies as my app for the last 2 summers, was using the garmin app when I had a garmin watch, but switched when I switched watches.

The regular courses I play:

Very nice!

Regarding what's in the bag - I dropped all my fairway woods out. I just go Driver > 3 iron. Instead, I added a couple extra wedges, so now I have PW (46) SW (54) SW(60) SW (64). I use the PW for ~120-135y shots, 54 for 110-120, 60 for 90-110. The 64 I primarily only use when I have a short run to the pin and have to hit it over a bunker, hill, etc, or when I'm chipping downhill at the green from close range (frequently happens if I overshoot the green).

Funny enough I rarely hit my 3 wood. Generally on a par 5 where the tee box is tight I’ll hit the 3 iron off the tee and then 3 wood for the second shot. I’m a lefty so many holes do not setup well for my natural fade with the driver and 3 wood.

I’m the same, I like to carry more wedges, generally use the PW 135-145, SW for anything less than 135, LW for when I want to have a little more loft on chips over bunkers with little green to work with or over the odd tree . I use the Ping LW for bunkers as I just love the feel of the club. It’s over 30 years old

Something I can sink my teeth into! I've been golfing since I was a child. Now I have a child so the golfing and HC have suffered a bit. I use the 18birdies app only because I can add my friends and keep their scores in easily and see GPS.

Whats In The Bag:
Taylormade Sim Max with Velocore Ventus Blue 6X Shaft - 9 degree turned up to 10.5
Taylormade Sim Ti 5w with 3w length Diamana Blueboard 7x - 19 degree turned down to 17 degrees. It's effectively a long-shafted 4w as a 3w is too long for me and too similar to driver off the tee. I went with the 5w head because turning it down from 19 to 17 (vs a 3w turning up from 15 to 17) opens the face to help fade.
Callaway Apex 19 20 degree hybrid with Graphite Design AD DI 95 S shaft.
Titleist 718 AP2 4-PW with KBS C-Taper 120 S shafts (bent 1 deg flat toe in the longer irons progressing to 2 deg in 8-PW)
Titleist SM5 50 deg gap wedge
Titleist SM7 54 and 60 deg SW and LW (The 60 is for short-sided chipping where I need to open it and throw the ball straight up)
GolfPride MCC +4 Grips from Driver to LW
2006 PING Redwood Anser with a P58 Blackout Grip
Snell MTB-X ball
Bushnell V4 with Slope

I tinker a lot so the woods and putters change frequently. The Ping putter is old faithful but I 2 other Scottys and just sold my Spider X. I think this driver is here to stay for a while. It's a complete piss-missile with that head and shaft combo. The 3w is my first big change in 6 years. It was just too good with dispersion.

Shot a 31 followed by a 30 on my favorite little 9-hole par 3 course.

Absolutely abysmal putting - 18 putts on the 31 and 20 putts on the 30. I missed 4 - yes FOUR - putts from inside 2 feet on the round where I shot 30. Arrggghhhhh.

I know one guy who's damn near all of these simultaneously every round.

He fits :
  • Unsolicited Swing Advice Guy
  • The Frat Boy
  • Yardage Book Guy
  • Rangefinder Guy
  • The Rules Nazi
  • The Color Commentator
  • The Fidgeter

As for me, I probably fit a few myself though.
  • Cell Phone Guy (Rarely, but happens sometimes)
  • The Air Counter
  • The Frat Boy
  • The Christopher Columbus (mainly because I bomb it far enough I lose sight and need help finding it if it's not dead center in the fairway - and even then sometimes I get more of a roll than we thought and find it 50 yards further up)

I used to live for golf. My vacations usually always were golf trips. Then I got married and had twins. I took a lot of lessons and attended the Golf Academy at Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island. I got my HC down to 4. Was playing two rounds every Saturday and Sunday. Got an invitation to even play a round at Trump International in WPB. Fast forward to today, and I haven't swung a club in eight years. I don't even know what clubs I own anymore. I had just gotten a new set before I stopped playing.

This thread has given me a little itch to go to the range with my 9 iron and hit a few.

Shot a 79 at Coyote Creek Tournament course on Monday...decided fuck it I'm ending 2020 in style, rain or shine, and kicking off the new year.

Pebble Beach on 12-25-20
Spyglass on 1-1-21

I've never played either and the last 2 months have been expensive as all fuck but screw it.

^^Nice! Ive played a few times in december its usually super cold or very overcast. hopefully you get a good weather day! Thats the only thing that is iffy about Peb is that its on the ocean so the weather is always all over the place. However as long as its not windy everything else is all good!

Great way to spend xmas day, Im assuming the hotels are all closed up there so you are sleeping in a Air Bnb? or just going for the day?

Just a day trip it's only about an hour and a half drive. Playing Pebble on Friday, then up to Napa to play Chardonnay on Saturday. So lots of driving but not far enough to worry about an AirBNB and with the back to back it wouldn't make sense anyway. Plus for Napa we're going to take the Tesla so...less gas.

I used to be pretty good. When we lived in Hilton Head, Nike semi gave me 4 lessons ($100 total)

After a year, I was hitting low 80's from the tips. Almost all irons...2 iron was reaching about 260 straight. 7 iron in, tap in for bird

15 years later, happy to break 100...and 3 iron is about 220...fucking olditis

Got wife new clubs, been hitting range.

Ok.

How about literally winning a car for a single shot? Does that not make it "about cars"?

https://www.compare.com/ways-to-save...rs-hole-in-one

Or perhaps 70 years of cars + golf like the Concours d'Elegance @ Pebble?

https://pebblebeachconcours.net/

Quote:
The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the flagship of Pebble Beach Automotive Week. Begun in 1950 and now considered to be the world’s premier celebration of the automobile, this is a can’t-miss event for every car enthusiast.

I could keep going here if you'd like. Merry Christmas!

It should go without saying that obviously golf isn’t about cars compared to motorsports and I’m being facetious in kind to your initial jab, please don’t take this as serious debate. The two worlds ARE solidly intertwined and highly correlated though.

I love to play but it takes a back seat to car stuff, though it's really picked up for me this year since it was the first thing to reopen. I get out once or twice a month.

WITB:
TM M6 Driver
Callaway Super Hybrid 20 deg
Callaway X18 irons 3-PW
Cleveland RTX 2.0 in 50, 56, 60 wedges
TM TP Ardmore putter
Snell MTB-X

I use the Grint as well and my handicap is sitting at a 10.5 currently.

I've been debating for a while now whether it'll be worth it to get fitted for new irons. I'm pretty decent with the X18s, have a consistent 15 yard gap between each of them all the way up to 3 iron, and they seem forgiving enough. Just can't tell whether spending 1k will result in a worthwhile improvement even though the clubs are like 12 years old now. Gaining additional distance would be useless for me, I'd just be looking for more forgiveness and consistency.

Played the same course last Friday and then last Sunday...Friday I shot an 85, Sunday I shot a 100.

Different group makes alllllllll the difference. Sunday group had a dude who kept talking in my backswing, got me irritated and threw me off for the day. Also one of those guys who HAS to give you advice, yardage, whatever - despite it being his first time on the course, and my 2nd...and insisting on shooting and then shouting out the yardage even when I'm already tracking it on GPS on my phone via The Grint.

Ugh.

Signed up for a bunch of tournaments, some lessons, and a club fitting though. Hoping to get my game down into the < 4 index required to start competing in PGA Amateur qualifiers. I'm at a 9.2 right now, Sunday's game aside.

New forum member and I can’t believe my maiden post is about golf, this could be a first.
The whole index thing is relatively new to UK golfers, initial impressions are positive.
Weather is turning now for us so managed 18 today and have another round booked for tomorrow. I live in Fife which is supposedly the home of this nightmare game, so a bit spoiled for choice in terms of courses.

After my last post, I went and got fitted for Callaway X-Forged CBs and am loving them. May not make things easier for me but its so much more satisfying playing with them.

Going out for another round tomorrow
