A reminder that all of us still have it better than most

Was cleaning up iCloud storage and found these photos from one of my last trips overseas when I still worked for Uncle Sam.

Puts any of the petty bickering we have here in this country in perspective, I believe.

I have hundreds more if anyone is interested in me posting additional photos beyond these ten.

Enjoy.

We have it so easy compared to the rest of the population of the planet. If one is born in the US, you have 95% of the problems people around the world face completely eliminated.

God Bless the USA and our Founding Fathers!! They got it right...we just have to make certain we don't F it up.

Which really isn't going well.

Great post!

I'm impressed #8 is pretty good, I assumed we'd be just outside the top 10.

LOL!

No matter what it's "But, but, but TRUMP!!!!

This is literally the review for the US. All others are neutral and/or positive but our stance on immigration, which is being made congruent with all other nations and trade, which is also being made congruent with all other nations, are called out as reasons for our rating and our questionable future stance on the world stage. You couldn't make this crap up.

Meanwhile, "It is difficult to overstate the influence France has on the world, both in the past and today."

Distant past, yes...today, not so much.

Meanwhile our progressive left is working tirelessly to ensure we have these problems. You know for the sake of equality.

A lot of you knocked the democrats in this thread with respect to how America is doing lately. While a worthwhile argument to be sure, it is the antithesis of what this thread was meant to entail.

It is important to remember that even the worst politicians currently running for office - even if Bernie Sanders was president with a democrat house and senate and enacted the majority of the insane ideas he has - this country will still be exponentially better than the country in which I took those photos.

That is what I am trying to express - we are so far above the majority of the world - that even if we fell by 90% due to some of the crazy ideas that some of the more recent politicians are touting - we would still be an exponentially better place to live than most of the world.

I just felt it important to note that many of us get bent out of shape about the opposing political party - but it is important to remember that even the most extreme visions for America that some politicians have are still far better than many other countries in the world.

Anyone interested in additional photos from some of my other fun vacation spots, lol? If so, just let me know - I am happy to post.

AS CT stated, thank you for your service. This is a rare, opinion-less post in appreciation of the point you are making which is 100% accurate. I tell people on regular basis, mostly because it makes me feel better after bitching or being an asshole, that if what I'm upset about is my biggest issue for that day, I'm doing better than 90% of everyone else.

Thank you - although at the time, I was no longer in the US Military. This was when I worked for a government agency.

Yup - that is what I was trying to get at. That we complain about things that are so petty when compared to many other issues in the world.

Most of those were taken when I was in Homs and Tiyarah.

Well in that case.... J/K

I have friends/family who have done tours there. Only people who have been there understand what it is like.

I assume you are being facetious - as that is rather unlikely. As bad as California is when it comes to some of the ridiculous policies they are enacting, I don't think we will see them being compared to Syria or to Sierra Leone in a real way anytime soon, lol.

Wait, we have 20 years to go now?? I thought it was only 12.

Seriously, the dryness of that first series lead me to believe it might be Cali too.

Its kind of sad when you look at photos of countries that clearly have a long history, culture and were clearly moving forward at some point and then to see them know with such inflicted damage and devastation. Some of the comments here might be tongue in cheek but these photos should remind all of us regardless of political views to remain vigilant to protect what those of us who are lucky enough to live in the first world western democracies have and enjoy. Thanks for posting these.

Yep, it is quite sad. That is the overarching feeling I had while over there - sadness.

The first set is from mostly around Homs and in the northeast sections of Syria. These were from around 2001 - a decade before civil war broke out and just after Bashar came to power. Most of the damage you see is from skirmishes between the SAA and Kurds. Most of those areas are nothing but rubble these days. Homs is almost 2,000 years old, I believe.

The second set is from Sierra Leone, I believe from about 1998. This was just after the civil war cease fire. This country has never done well and is basically the poster child for most African Colonies. Once becoming an independent state, corruption, coup's, graft, and poverty reigned.

The third set of photos is from Somalia. This was during the height of the civil war in the mid 1990's. Many of those photos are from Mogadishu, and a few others are further northwest, into the area surrounding Beledweyne. These photos are from nearly a decade before Al-Shabaab came in and decimated that town.
