The God Thread

I don't know if this has been done before or even recently but I wanted to take the pulse of OT and see who believes in God. I'd prefer that this not go down the religious path of Christian, Catholic, Protestant, Islam, etc. Who believes in God, creator of heaven and earth or more specifically, a monotheistic God?

Please be respectful of other's beliefs or non-beliefs. Please avoid, "You're gonna burn in hell" and no, "You may as well believe in The Great Pumpkin" comments.

Cheers-mk

P.S. My act of liking the posts does not endorse the ideas expressed but rather is a thanks for being respectful of others beliefs.

I think of myself as agnostic. I've met many people who are much smarter than me, many of them scientists and they believe or at least said they did. I gather the explanation some have given and I'm speculating on the others is that if you look at the universe and all the complexities of it and all the things that science has yet to solve then there must be some kind of greater power that contributed to it. This is sort of where I sit too if the truth be told. I don't think theres some old man with a great flowing beard sitting on a thrown in the sky, but more like the existence of an organic power that is contributing to all we understand and don't and may never understand.

It seems to me that the traditional view of god isn't true as a great and merciful being wouldn't let there be so much needless suffering.....

Peace

If Earth was visited by beings from another planet during the time of ancient man then these beings would be interpreted as 'Gods'. I find this to be more likely then the 'traditional' belief in 'God'.
We know that mankind along with all life evolved, it was not 'created ' along with the Earth in six days, with the 'creator' sitting back & admiring his handiwork on the seventh day.
Gods are something created by man in order to control other men.
The bloody Romans had a God for pretty much everything from Abundantia, the god of abundance & prosperity to Volturnus the God of water & lets not forget it is the Romans that have managed to hang on to some semblance of power for over two thousand years through the Roman Catholic Church

The is no way to prove or disprove the concept.

Therefore I am a hopeful christian but realistic agnostic.

I'd also like everyone to truthfully ask themselves, are they into faith just to avoid damnation or is there truly an absolute love for the word? Regardless, I respect anyone's decision.

(Should have included a poll)

Religion is a component of social dominance theory.

It's a product of 250 million years of evolution.

If the general conception is that 'God' is the creator, then the way man..or should that be personkind is making advances in genetics & AI then it surely follows that it is us that will become Gods, if indeed we are not already. Why else would the most important part of our brains have a temple lobe & all religions worship at temples

Is this not Godlike? Is it not more likely that the 'prophets' managed to 'speak' with their inner minds & interpreted that as speaking with God, rather than the God that Christians & Muslims would have us believe in.

Seems like this thread will ultimately come down to the question of “What is the purpose of life?”

I believe in God, not the Pearly Gates where your either deemed in or out in the afterlife (lol let’s just think about that), but it seems futile to think life is nothing more than random experiences.

I’m not religious by any means but was raised Catholic so I have that bias pounded into my head after years of going to church

I thought about including a poll but I wanted people to think a bit more about it whilst responding rather than hit a predetermined selection. Thanks for your input.

I'm somewhere along these lines. I certainly do not believe it is the way the major religions portray it to be.

has anyone read Robert Lanza's work on biocentrism and the afterlife? some of his theories hinges on some questionable evidence, but his work is very compelling.

Nope, no god(s), but there is some "order/system" to the universe, could be called "god" for want of a better term. The traditional/religions concept of god? Not a chance.
