Im just suggesting a cf prop shaft would be better utilized in the gts model vs a standard M model where most owners would most likely not be able to tell the difference. The gts still has a cf shaft, the standard models don't currently. Will BMW put them back in the standard M models, once taken away why should they? (Yeah I know they say it's needed to make room for a filter, ) But what might happen, they might offer cf shafts as an upgrade for those who think they really need it in the standard M issue, but it's going to cost you $$$ to feel better. This is pure speculation on my part but I've been following the nickeling & dimeing practices from BMW for over 20 years every time I go through the order process. But hey I hope they do get it back for free!

Discussing the CF driveshaft in the GTS is a moot point since the GTS has ended production well before the switch to the steel driveshaft. I think it is more pertinent discussing the fact that the CS, which has not yet started production, will be the only F8X that will still be produced with the CF driveshaft.

Ed Zachery.

Plus - if they were to use the carbon driveshaft as an "upsell" put it in something most buyers would upsell to - and the GTS is not a viable upsell to 99% of M3/M4 buyers. it's a niche market.

I'll agree to it's a moot point till we see what BMW will do. In any event I hope you get your cf shaft in the future, if it makes you feel better.

Agreed. My point was BMW will use the cf shaft were it makes the most sense.

To be honest - I'm not that worried about the CF shaft. I'm in the process of ordering an M3 for late next year which won't have one.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is for BMW to make maximum money, they have to provide viable upsell options - like the Competition Package. If they made the LED headlight package a GTS only option, they wouldn't sell any. By making it an option on all vehicles, they sell a lot more. I see it being the same with the CF driveshaft - they will want to offer it on as many models as it will fit to sell more.

Let me just add, only a small percentage of M buyers actually track, thus I don't think they will walk into a dealership asking about a cf shaft, what they will be more interested in, and wrongly in my opinion, is HP & TQ. So to your assumption, I hope they do use more cf but I'm thinking that's not what the M daily driver is looking for. Tapping out here, as I think we both want the same thing but have differing views of what BMW might do.

And in fact, an early 2021 release as MY2022 is probably more likely yet.

Just as the the F80 trailed the F30 by over two years, the same situation is probably going to happen for the G80 as compared to the G20. Remember, the last E90 M3 was built in late 2011 as an MY2011, and the F80 did not arrive until early 2014 as an MY2015. That’s a gap of just over two calendar-years, and in fact a three model year hiatus. With the last F80 M3 known to be coming in late 2018 as an MY2018, we can expect that there will be no MY2019, MY2020, nor MY2021 while we wait for the successor to drop in early 2021 as an MY2022.

In the past I’d mentioned the chance of the M3 coming closer on the heels of the 3 Series. While this has technically been a possibility with every generation, it has yet to happen. Unfortunately, based on comments recently from SCOTT, I don’t expect to see this change with the next generation. So, while I would not yet completely rule it out, as things stand now the odds do not look good.
With competition between brands now a days I don't see a 2 year gap anymore. What was the gap on the new M5 based in the new platform. Was it 1 year? I believe 1 year max before we see the next gen M3/4 after the 3/4 is released.

Roughly yes - it will be a bit more than a year between the initial availability of the new G30 5 Series and initial availability of the F90 M5 by the time the latter hits the streets next year.

But that's a different type of situation that doesn't apply directly. Did you read my last post above (#64)? It has a more detailed explanation.

Yes. The devil is in the details, however. In this case, the important detail is that the next 4 Series will not be here until 2020. So the M3/M4 will come in 2021.

The front looks like current F80 BMW M3, the rear w/o seeing the badge maybe mistaken for Lexus or KIA

The lines look better suited for the 2dr M4 rather than a beefier or bulkier M3 in my eyes. And yes I do agree with the others above, the rims are fantastic, hope they stick as is.

lol

C for effort, F on execution

Zero chance the next gen looks remotely like this. Nothing about this is attractive, the next M3 will look great.

F80 will go in history as the sportiest looking M if the next M3/4 looks like this.

Speculative specs (translated by CanAutM3):
  • Will be lighter with a new platform
  • Will use a development of the 3.0 liter 6-cylinder twin turbo with ~475ps base, ~500ps for the "M3 Competition"
  • AWD with RWD at the flick of a swicth reserved for the bigger and heavier M5, M3 will be RWD only
  • 6MT will continue to be offered
  • Should get more expensive going from current 77.5k Euro to about 80k Euro

Looks like a 7 Series

All the comments regarding putting power down... yes, but there are quite a number of cars out there that spank the M3 numbers, are RWD and still put the power down fine.
