Leasing cars to avoid maintenance expense is like buying a restaurant so you don't have to pay for your meals.

Depends on the car & what problems you have had. Drivetrain repairs can get costly.

I buy my cars with cash and generally keep them a long time. Since 1984, I've had these as my daily drivers:

1984 to 1992: 1984 Camaro Z28
1992 to 1998: 1987 Mustang GT
1998 to 2005: 1995 Mustang GT
2005 to 2015: 2005 Mustang GT
2015 to present: 2015 M235i

When I was researching the BMW, I honestly felt it would satisfy my performance car itch for a number of years, just like the cars above.

But oddly now, after exactly one year with the M235i, I find myself wanting to go back to a car with a NA V-8. I miss the sound and the instant throttle response. Badly.

I think I really need a C7 Corvette, Camaro 1LE, or Shelby GT350. And then that would be it.

OMG, yes white with blue stripes is so classic! Who thinks that car wouldn't be fun to drive?

You nailed it with the word "cameo". I just had to try a BMW for curiosity. All I've heard for years is that they just aren't about the numbers, but so many more intangibles. And I found it absolutely true! The ergonomics, comfort, handling, power, visibility, maneuverability, quality, and attention to detail are all there. The car does fit like a glove and is so easy to drive.

The only thing I miss is the NA V-8. And maybe a little of the brashness. Unfortunately, the NA V-8 a big thing.

I agree with you, 1st time got to 5 years I am at my 3rd new car since moving to Ireland from London 10 years ago, the biggest issue here is the VRT an extra tax on top of the VAT at around 25% so my 520d with few options with the m kit cost me 60k Euros just under 50k sterling, the depreciation here is twice more pain full here in Ireland compare my days in London, hence hanging to my 5 a bit longer this time around.

We have an old Subaru (2006) Outback 2.5SE; just a beater but it's comfortable, handles brilliantly, light and airy, huge boot (slept in it last week), bullet proof. It just works and does a good job. It's not flashy, fast or equipped with the latest automatic eyelash curlers but it's so dependable. The polar opposite of constantly craving the latest rented (leased) toy.

The M135i does it's jobs well too; fast, subtle, RWD, decent boot, well made. No plans to change it.

And the VW California, due in a week will do its job well too; well hopefully it will; our last one was brilliant but a reliability disaster.

I only change cars if they let me down. If they work as intended, they get very well looked after. And I get a lot of pleasure looking after them.
