Either wrapped over them (eh, lazy) or removed and installed new ones over the wrap.

Lots of people in this thread are throwing out "best shop you can" and the only price quoted has been "5-7k". This is way off. Try about triple that if you're getting a proper color change wrap (as in, door jambs and other parts you'll occasionally see are wrapped) from a high end shop. I was quoted 9k for a matte clear and I didn't even want the roof or door jambs done--didn't feel it was worth it.

I'd imagine you'll get into the 15k range for high quality vinyl done properly at a high end shop that isn't gonna nick your original paint with a razor blade.

I agree on the cost comment, I suspect a really good job is more expensive than people realise.

A silver or grey car, you can get away without doing door jams etc you'd think.

Spray wrap looks like hyped up BS. I would not be comfortable with having all those panels removed.

I am really hesitating either to paint my car or just wrap it, the thing is with wrapping its nice cuz you can change it and it's not permanent but I'm just afraid it might scratch easily or look bad and fade or wear down a bit too quickly due to the bad weather here (it's raining 24/7).

Wrapping a car is an easy way to turn it into a clapped out pile of shit. I spend half my time between LA and SF. Between the two, I've seen everything imaginable wrapped from every other shop claiming to be the best, and I still have yet to see a wrap job I'd be proud of.

Watching a 19 year-old put a Lambo back together with half of the tabs and clips missing on every piece is quite amusing, though.

Decent paint is properly expensive, 15K or thereabouts for a proper job.

Great question.

The premise of removing all body panels then sticking them back on seems risky but I'd imagine the highest end shops don't mess around with their quality control.

I imagine I'll face a similar conundrum to OP one day on the used market. I'm very picky about colors. For example I would only want a 911 in Red, Yellow, or Miami Blue; a Ferrari can only be Red, etc. Paying significantly more for a factory painted car is unappealing when one can get a cheaper silver/grey model and wrap it.
