People selling their vehicle because "I want a truck instead"

I encounter many private sellers put out the reason for selling: I want to switch to truck.
Some even willing to trade their BMW with truck. They bought a BMW and owned it for several months only.
Nothing wrong with that. It just so many of them with the same reason.

Some guy around here has a lifted Tundra with a plate that says AFTER 5.

Maybe they wanna go bar-hopping and not worry about curbs, jersey barriers, parking blocks, and other hazards that plague a less-than-sober driver in a nice, smaller car like a BMW or a Lotus

Trucks are incredibly useful, comfortable, the new fords atleast are very fast, many are very luxurious and they hold their value crazy well. Not sure what the issue is with what someone else wants to drive anyway

Have you seen the new Dodge TRX with a Hellcat engine? 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. Even I want to trade my BMW in for one of those.

Trucks have come a very long way in the past 10 years in terms of meeting car levels of comfort, luxury amenities, etc. Plus you get all of the other benefits of a truck in terms of occasionally hauling and towing. Even normal F-150s do 0-60 in under 6 seconds, not even including the super trucks like the TRX and Super Snake. Obviously the handling isn't great but very few fullsize sedans or SUVs handle well either.

Top trim half tons have largely replaced luxury cars around here. A Limited trim F-150 is the rural S-class now.

I had trucks. Crew cabs as matter of fact. But I've switched to a truck based SUV. Most of the time the bed was empty. It's been Rhino lined and even had a tonneau cover but in the end it was used like a gas guzzling family sedan. I do need a tow vehicle that can pull at least 8000 pounds so a unibody vehicle just won't do.

Just like what Jim Gaffigan said, "most of the time I just see them pulling into a Cracker Barrel"

I think NYT did a story on this a couple years ago and mentioned how luxury sedans were being ditched in favour of trucks.

I'm sure one of the biggest contributors are the tax laws. Business owners can get a big deduction on the purchase of vehicles with a certain gross weight. I have a buddy in his late 20s who just picked up a mom car X5 instead of a sporty sedan/coupe due to that.

truck has more utility... easy to justify a 60-70k+ truck because you can haul things, bring family, dog, wife is comfortable, modern tech / luxury inside, and MPG has improved alot over the years etc. Much harder to justify something like an M2 comp or Cayman to wife and kids. especially if you are the type to do the speed limit everywhere and not use the cars full abilities.

personally i'd never own one. the times i need to haul things are very few and far between. i can rent one from enterprise if i need to.

Keep an eye on gas prices, which have started creeping up. Not an issue for those who can truly afford the truck, but I remember 2008 when oil prices spiked to $140 per barrel and used car lots were flooded with trucks and SUV's, sold by drivers who were desperate to unload them for a Prius.

Agreed. Trucks are great but you won’t see me buying one simply for the fact that if I need that kind of utility I’ll just borrow my dad’s Tundra.

Nowadays most stuff can be delivered to you or you can just rent a truck for reasonably cheap.

The reason people hate pickups is because sometimes they drive like jerks or they are obnoxiously lifted to blind the oncoming car with their headlights, among other things. I won’t group all pickup drivers in the same category but the monster jam trucks make you wonder exactly what they are compensating for...

Why does someone who mods their trucks have to mean they are compensating for something?
I dont see it as any different from someone modding their bmw or any other car. Looks wise imo they usually look better with a slight lift and offroad tires. Plus i know many people that do occasionally go offroad in their trucks.

that stigma is common knowledge around here especially when you get out in the sticks sorry if it offends you...

Big tires, big lift kit, large 12" exhaust pipe sticking straight up rolling smoke = someone trying to balance their truck's big badass attitude with something that's not quite as big lol

I’ve heard it before obviously but i’m asking a serious question. Why does someone with a lifted truck mean a tiny member? How is it different from any other modified vehicle?

You couldn't pay me to drive a lifted truck. Couldn't think of anything more opposite of my persona.

i've seen some nice lifted trucks. but most of the time there is a big muffler out the side pointed right at someones window. or they dont run mudflaps so they kick up rocks.

but the worst part... the headlights blind everyone. especially low sports cars.

Well, so be it. Let them buy their trucks!

Personally, I love that our specific cars stand out in a SEA of SUVs, jacked up trucks, and bizarro-world hybrids.

This evening was absolutely gorgeous. So, I took the top down, and enjoyed cruising down the local boulevard. I had no envy for other trucks I saw. In fact, they gave me cool nods of appreciation.

To each their own.
