Major change without majorly changing. This is going to look great lowered with some carbon. The G22/G8x cars seem to be the only ones getting the ugly treatment lol

Huh! I genuinely detest the front and rear of this thing! Wow BMW is really consistent these days with the misses. Oh and thanks for reusing that unrefined looking, clumsy steering wheel and ridiculous digital cluster…..yet again. Generic. Boring. Characterless. Oh and ugly too.

Since this is just the M trim designation equipment package, hear me out…. What if the M2 gets the twin coffin grille treatment as well?
⚰️⚰️

I mean, I'm not saying that it will and hope it doesn't, but I just put that out into the universe.

It could happen..😬🤣

I don't hate the sport line and the side profile is proper. But honestly, overall I dislike this as much or more than the new 4 series. Everything just looks so...overdone. I do like the interior though, some interesting little quirks going on.

I actually think my favourite looking of these 'new' BMWs is the i4 despite the grill; until I have to see the tacked on screens inside it.

It might be slightly larger but if they do that they're really screwing themselves

It's a dealbreaker for many many people

none of the insiders on the forum have mentioned larger/different grilles for the M2 so my hope is that we don't have to worry about that lol

The new 2-Series is the same length while adding 2" of width compared to the E92 coupe. That's why this car looks less awkward than the last generation.

This is why Porsche never changes the 911 (and they still manage to get some negative feedback with new releases). It seems to be in vogue to dislike new BMW designs. It's all subjective, but the vociferous negative reaction on social media is puzzling (check Instagram). Best to just let the sales data speak.

A large number of the E36 guys thought the E46 was over-styled in 1998/1999.

Why are you talking about a car that's been out of production for 22+ years in relation to a modern car? An E21 is worlds lighter than an E36, but people aren't crashing the E36 forums telling you about their E21.

Modern cars are porky, I've got a GTI just trying to not buy a porker, but even it is 3,100 pounds, but at least it has a manual.

Like someone already said, if you want a cheap, light weight, rwd car, it's pretty much a BRZ/86 or Miata.

Stop complaining. BMW is smart! They created this, so that G80 looks not that ugly any more...

Yeah it's kind of like the Audi A3. I'd buy one for my kid and he'd love it.

You wouldn't catch me in one though. A younger me would be ALL about it. Looks kind of anime-speed-racer cartoonish. And with the hood and mirrors they added some very low-cost M-Flash.

BMW cost cutting already starting to show
I think BMW is doing this intentionally with the design language to further attract younger crowd. Guys in their 30s/40s won't be attracted to the kiddy boy racer looks and will have no choice to go for the 3 series (or M3).

The current M2C has a broader appeal and it looks menacing and grown up. So I really hope they bring back the hunker down looks in the M2 G87 series.

I think the M2 will clean up the rear design a bit. I'm neutral on this new 2er. Don't hate it but don't like it.

This is an excellent base for an M2. This car is already wider than the F87. I expect the G87 to be a winner.

Wow.. okay, this is a lot but get's get into it.

Starting off, I was really hopeful for this car based on the spy shots but had some concerns about the overall proportions from some angles. Unfortunately, at least based on the press photos it looks like my concerns turned out to be correct, but I'll reserve my final thoughts for when I see it in person.

Let's start off where I think the car is strongest - the front. No overly proportioned kidneys is a plus! I like the lower lip, but I do think the "triangle" design looks overall better positioned on the 220i than it does on the M240i (where it's a bit too much).

Love that they have a broad power dome, but I had thought it would more akin to what the new 400Z was rocking in terms of how it flowed with the rest of the hood, instead I think it's a tiny bit too big.

I don't mind the single element headlights, as there can be a case for some of that design being a call back to much older BMW - though I wish they double stacked the coronas inside. The weird thing about this is that I think the design cues carry over more from then i3 and i8 than they do anything else in the lineup, which I didn't expect and can't unsee. I think it just worked so much better on the i8.

Moving over to the side, there's a lot similar to my e82 135i, especially the super prominent shoulder line that has a bit of an overall curve down versus what we saw on the F22/G87. Not bad in and of itself, but I thought the side profile was one of those angles that looked awkward on the e82 and that again is the case here.

I think what doesn't quite work for me is how out of proportion the front end is with respect to the overall length of the car - it reminds me more of a Z4/Supra from the leading edge all the way to the A-pillar. It also looks like the overall greenhouse is pushed back towards the back of the car, which does not leave much room for a well executed rear end and trunk area.

This in turn leads to a very poorly executed rear end, which is both overdesigned (for example, in terms of the lower valence) and has a ton of unresolved lines. This is especially true when seen from the rear-three-quarter view, where the integrated ducktail-ish design has a different overall radius than the spoiler on top of it, and even seemingly changes its radius even more when you get to the rear fenders.

Finally, the tail lights are way too small relative to the size of the rear end, which leave little room for an integrated lighting signature that flows with the rest of the body. I think that's straight up botched both in terms of historical design as well as the rest of the lineup.

Some photo comparisons included for reference.

You can make a case this M240i has almost as much presence as the F87. The outgoing M240i was a pretty plain looking car in comparison. I like this much more than I thought I would and am very excited about the upcoming M2.

As a former OG M2 owner I always prefered the look of the F82 as the M2 to me looked a little squished in and chunky. This car looks cleaner and leaner, yet more aggressive. The only thing I am lukewarm in is the tail lights but then again I never liked the F87 tail lights so in this case it's the one place where they still can't get things right. Overall this is a big improvement for both of these models.
