What's the WORST design aspect of your vehicle or other vehicles you know of?

For my car (2nd gen Z4), it's gotta be the HORRIBLE rainwater dispersing 'sys' (whatever the term is...). I'm not a technical expert, but apparently this is a common prb and is caused when some seal fails so that water instead of channelling safely away, goes into the trunk behind some panel and can even flood the battery and roof's hydraulic pump sitting underneath the trunk's floor. Can't believe they designed something so flimsy, relying on just some lousy rubber seals. Funny thing is that they thought of this potential hazard and bothered to encase the battery in some foam material and even put the pump on stilts!!! How about saving all that engineering brainpower and just make a simple and effective waterway!

The horrible location of the cup holders in my 2022 G29 Z4.

The passenger cannot even rest their arm on the center console and the driver's elbow constantly hits the cups.

I've been buying new vehicles since 1968, and could always find major or minor irritants, but far fewer as time went by. The last several purchases have been about perfect....Porsche Macan S, BMW X-5, and an M340i. The only comment on the M340i is that the horn requires way too much pressure. Wish my earlier purchases were that perfect. Also would have liked a silver and nice metallic red as color options.

On our new G30, there is no automatic fan setting for the HVAC. The owner's manual says to set the "intensity" manually. Just wow. Or perhaps I don't understand how to automate it. Every other car we own will automatically vary the fan speed, except for the Z.

It’s the stupid stuff that drives me crazy. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. For example, the climate control was a knob for the temperature. If you wanted to go from heat to air, you just spun the knob and went from 74 degrees to 60 in no time. NOW, you have to press the stupid arrow 14 freaking times!!! No big deal most of the year but during season change, it’s a pain in the ass to go from heat in the morning to AC in the afternoon.

The auto for wipers was a flick up on the stalk in the 2000s. They then changed it to a button on the end of the stalk. Perfect! They changed it back to a flick up.

Don’t even get me started on the cargo area of the Xs. I had two areas that were secure. On had a net and the other a strap. It was great for holding washer fluid, windex and whatever other nonsense. They are gone. No way to secure anything.

And what about 21 inch wheels for winter wheel and tire package? WTF? Don’t the engineers know a narrower contact patch is better with a bigger sidewall? I’m now at 295s. Winter set up used to be 19s or 20s with 255s and then 275s.

OK. Rant over.

The wiper control arm on the F31 every time you need windshield washer you have to des activate the rear wiper. Also if you start the car with the rear wiper « on » you have to use the rear window washer to get it going what a stupid design.

Still automatic, BMW give you one additional feature of choice.

Just choose the 'intensity' level you prefer, for range of airflow, and leave the Auto function to do the rest. Each have their own characteristic curves for blower control, air distribution and air flap control.

BTW, 'intensity' levels (different automatic programs) have existed for about 20-years. In a 5-series, since the E60.

Isn't the answer in the name "Climate Control"? For me, it is "set and forget". Mine has an Auto setting with a built in thermostat.

Well for an E86 Z4 MCoupe it would be the rain water holding system otherwise known as the bird bath or duck pond.
It's a feature on the rear deck lid/hatch that allows birds to enjoy hours of swim time, it is also has the added feature of encouraging rust on the submerged metal.

When you engage auto wipers on the e9x the status light is right behind the rim of the steering wheel, so you have to crane your head around to see what it's actually doing or press the button (again) until you get a response.

Also in RHD models the pedal offset sucks! I wouldn't need a dead pedal if the actual pedals were in the right place, and the pedals could be in the right place if the dead pedal wasn't there. And the clutch pedal sits too high.

I can't disable the interior lights when opening a door or unlocking, and they don't even poll the light sensor to figure out if they might be needed or not.

I'm sure there are more, but I've forgotten them for now...

You do have the option to switch interior lights off.

Im new to BMW so you may all love this but...

indicators. You go to press them gently and they click on and then return to center. so you go to turn them off and end up putting them on in the other direction. Maddening.

Off the top of my head...

BMW M2 - Long fart sound upon throttle lift in gear
Lotus Exige - No seat rake or height adjustment (because everyone is the same size)
Acura RDX - Door integration into the rear quarter panel lip
IS 350 FSport - Trans tunnel encroaching into the driver's footwell

Should be in the User Manual.... Just press the main interior light switch (while lights are on) until the lights go out. They will stay off until you press again to switch on. Which you can do anytime you want the lights.

I don't run my interior lights in summer, haven't done so for 20-years in my BMWs.

Apologies, but wanting real M styling on a M-light should not count as a " worst design aspect" . I Drive an M-light ( X3 M40i) , and I would love to have the styling of the real Ms, but I did not buy one. BTW Your car is already beautiful
as it is. But, we gotta respect that the boys( and girls) who own real M cars deserve the design and performance upgrades they paid for.

Just my 2 cents, but like I said, I think your car is already really great looking !

happy driving
