Procede + 335 = Porsche Hunter (?)
I'll probably get flamed for this since it's my first post, but I'm going to post it anyway. I will also add the caveat that I am a certified Porschefile. My previous ride was a Boxster S, but I bought the 335 when family needs made it necessary for a more practical car. I never even considered a BMW until I read about the 335. I had always liked the M3, but for the price I always thought the Boxster S was a more fun car (I'll probably get flamed for that too!).
Anyway, I took my Crimson Red MT e90 335 to Putnam Park in Indiana a couple of weeks ago to run with the Central Indiana PCA (buddy of mine has a 996 Targa). I was expecting to run toward the back of the pack due to the soft suspension of the 335, my RFTs and the fact that 911s are no slouch in the power department. To my amazement I was able to easily run down all of the Porsches (no Turbos in my group) on the straights and hang close enough through the corners so that I was running faster lap times than them. There was also an e39 M5 out there, but he really didn't have a chance - 335 was considerably faster on the straights and through the corners. I was pleasantly surprised that my Baby Bimmer did so well. This has gotten me to thinking that with a bit of suspension work (PSS9 & H&R rear sway), together w/ a non-staggered setup of 255/35/18s on lightweight 8.5" rims all around, I should be considerably faster than all but the fastest 911s. Maybe a brake upgrade later on, but I didn't really have any trouble w/ fade; although, the temperature was in the 60s, so that probably had something to do w/ it. I wouldn't have believed it until I experienced it, but the 335 can make a very good track car. With a few more upgrades I hope to change my thread title from "Porsche Hunter (?)" to "Porsche Killer!". Now that would be fun! The 335 really is a stealth beast! |

Were you running with advanced 911 drivers? Boxsters are FAST with very little mods and a good driver.
The 335i should be fast with a few mods, but with the right driver, 911s are hard to beat. |

Boxster S & Cayman = more involved [fun] handling, E9x = better DD. Modded E9x faster, but still more luxury oriented. All great cars.

This was my first time at Putnam, so I was running with the novice group. Thus, I attribute some of my ability to keep up in the corners to my prior road course experience. I'm sure the faster 911 guys would be faster than me with my current set up. I also add that that while the car pushed pretty badly most of the time, when I could get the car to rotate the chassis felt quite good. The problem is that this was hard to do w/ the stock suspension and wheels/tires. However, it was on the straights that I was shocked. The car is just a beast! It didn't just pass the 911s, it ran them down and blew past them.
stressdoc: I agree completely. Boxster S and Cayman S are much more visceral cars. I absolutely love the wail of a flat-6 at WOT! ToddPhilly: No oil temp issues at all. The car ran flawlessly. |

S4to335: Awesome setup! Let us know how it handles on track. I'll be very anxious to hear. How does the treadwidth of your 235R compare to the 255 RFT that came stock? I would imagine their very similar, correct? I contemplated the SSRs, but decided to go with Rota SVNs when I saw the deal available from Subydude.com. 18x8.5 all around for $800 including shipping. Couldn't really beat that deal. Wheels should arrive tomorrow.

sinaquanon,
I love your review. I have a couple of comments and recomendations. As far is the lighter rims, consider the Kosei ones, I just put some 17x8.5 and they only cost $165 a piece, but get this, they only weight 16.8lbs!!. You would have to spent $$350 a piece to match that(OZ ultraligeras,SSR,BBS forged, etc). As far is the brakes, I will leave them stock, I keep reading that after 13" and bigger there is no much difference on stopping power, the stock rotors are already 13.6", that is huge!! but the best part is that you can run hard on the car and BMW will replace the rotors for free, that is a good reason to not upgrade. Are you unsatisfied with the stock braking power? Cmon man, compare the 335i braking power with the competitors like the Evo or STI, the BMW actually brakes equally or better. I would go ahead and do the sway bar, it is cheap and it helps with the body roll. And last but not least, I had a Porsche 911(964) Carrera 4 Cabriolet, I know where you are coming from the BMW just delivers the whole package(performance, braking , acceleration, gas mileage, warranty, appeal, funtionality) my .2c |

Exhaust Bilstein's Quaife UUC sways Volk RE30's with R compounds Road Atlanta in December. BBK should be delivered and installed by then. I've passed Cayman S's, 911's, C6 Z06 vettes, even a Viper. Doesn't mean anything imo. Difference in drivers. |

The last Panoz track day of the year, brought to you by Barber Motorsports with a new higher price!
Dec 2nd and 3rd /not bitter about the price increase... i promise EDIT: I really should have scheduled Sebring with Chin in December instead. It would be more track time. But then there's the hotel and the drive to south of Orlando. There's also the risk of some small complication causing me to have to have the car towed back home from there as I do not have a trailer yet. Last edited by Hegemony; 10-23-2007 at 01:16 PM.. |

Yeah, not exactly inexpensive, especially if you race both days. But, man are you going to have a blast.

Its not racing..it is a high performance driving school. Chin Motorsports in the east are like the Tracquest events that we have here in the west...only they are called Northern California Racing Club out here. NCRC has a time trial as one of their sessions...still not a race.

Yeah, no racing for me! Last thing I need is someone to bump my baby going through the Esses.
I really do like the Tracquest format. Gives you a lot of seat time per event. |

Ha, S4to335...my use of the term "race" was not literal dude. I used it as a term of art. Would you rather me say "highway driving?" I know it is a driving school and I know you are not lined up and racing against other vehicles. You can, however, push your car to the limits and race against yourself. You also can pass cars in the group in which Hedemony will participate. That is more or less what I meant when i used the term, "racing." You are not out there taking it easy like a Sunday drive. You are racing around Road Atlanta.
