E39 turn signal lamp replacement

I had a passenger side turn signal lamp die recently.
I purchased a couple replacements at a parts store.
When I got under the hood I found that it wasn't an easy task.
After removing the air filter I was able to remove the wiring plug but couldn't get enough leverage/access for either my fat paw to get in there, nor would a pair of pliars work.
I don't want to muscle it enough to break the thing.
Is there a a special tool to do the job or do I have to remove the entire headlamp array to get in there?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
steve
