Regenerative knee surgery

Hi,
I'm due for regenerative knee surgery next month, was wondering if anyone's had this & how successful it is. I know all cases are different but would appreciate some input.
The op entails removal of some bone fragments I have in there, cleaning up what's left of my cartilage & then using some of my stem cells & marrowbone injected into my knee to hopefully regrow the cartilage.

probably shouldn't comment, but having said that...does the stem cell bone marrow injection have any kind of track record ? have they ever identified a case in which they detected cartilage regeneration ?
BTW what is wrong wth your knee ? and how long have you had the condition ?

Yes I've been told a 70% chance of it being successful.
I have arthritis in that knee & it's got really painful over the last 6 months.
I've been a carpenter for the last 31 years, didn't take any notice of my dad when he used to tell me to wear knee pads & to not work in the rain

I'd been told my cartilage was torn (orthopedic doctor and imaging) and I needed surgery that was about three years ago, that my running days were numbered. My knee was injured to where I couldn't go for recreational walks. Over the years I've partially healed and re-injured one knee or the other.
After losing weight and cutting out heavy olympic squats my knees fell great, some arthritic pain but very occasional.
Just take a conservative course of action and research. 70% success rate for stem cell bone marrow seems extremely high for that technology. Though when going through a procedure a 90% success rate is obviously a 10% failure rate, which is significant.

Try this instead of running.
Much better than running for your knees.

yes, I do row at my gym both for warm-up before lifting and at time for endurance. (and I do spin classes) But, I love running, where I live it's all kinds of hills and streams, 150 year old neighborhoods and new neighborhoods, always finding new roads and it's all within a five mile radius of my home. I've literally run with deer.

No doubt rowing machines are one of the best. BTW did you read about the COO or similar that stole millions form The Peloton stationary bike company?

I am not a doctor, I underwent a shoulder surgery in my 30's after bodybuilding for many years. I developed tendinitis from bone spurs and calcium buildup and also suffered a tear of the anterior rotator cuff. Stem cell therapy was not an option for me. I was always very interested in body chemistry and used HGH in my 20's with great results. I took a low dose of HGH post surgery, same dosage recommended for anti aging therapies.

2-4 iu Somatropin HGH injected subcutaneous per day, post surgery, ( .04 - .06mg/kg/week)

I split the dosage 12 hours apart to maintain stable levels. I ended the treatment after 1 year.

Chappers

do a google search for NBC Nightly News on knee pain (arthritis) remedy w/o surgery. 6/12/17.

New treatment is radio frequency cooling injections ($4000) to rid the pain. pain can return after 6-12 months, then another procedure.

Hey Scott, interesting but would be expensive if the injections were to become a regular thing.
I have no cartilage left in the middle of my knee joint, so it's basically bone on bone with a few lose bone fragments floating around in there for good measure.
This last 6 months I've been unable to work, walking or going up or down stairs is very difficult & painful.
They are going to try & grow some new cartilage if this doesn't work they've told be it'll be a replacement knee. So I'm hoping the cartilage will grow back.
My biggest concern is whether or not I will be able to return to work as a carpenter, working at heights pitching roofs, joisting etc. it'll depend on how much mobility I regain at the moment I cannot even straighten my right leg & am starting to get pain in my left hip.

I had the op on the 6th July at The Kent Institute of Medical Science. Went into theartre at 3.30pm, came round at 5pm & was back in my room at 6pm & home the next day at 11am.

They went into my knee joint removed some bone fragments, cleaned up my remaining cartilage, drilled a hole into my hip to extract the marrow bone & stem cells, this was mixed with a solution & injected into my knee joint & hopefully with time this will form new cartilage.
I am unable to put any weight on my right leg for two weeks & then only partial bearing for another four to six.
It took me a couple of days to get the hang of the crutches, I can move fairly briskly with them now.

The constant pain I was in has now gone, although I am still sore from the op.
Swellings coming down nicely & I have a 3 times daily exercise routine.
As of yet I am still unable to fully straighten my leg, I am hoping this will improve with time & exercise.

Thank you for the reply my friend
I'm sure this was the right treatment for your knee , your problem is your right knee . Here it's my left knee , I have wear in my left knee by too many heavy squats over the years in the gym .
But I was also before cyclist in Belgian competition , so my knees got overload by too much of sports in competition.

The last 2 years I got injections with Euflexxa , got already 5 series from 5 injections . So in total I got 25 injections . Injections under the patellar knee cap are not funny and it was not cheap !
The librucation from Euflexxa works but not long enough and when I need to walk a lot at work my knee really hurts .

I know 2 people with new knees , one guy is ok the other guy is nok .
Anyway I really hope that your treatment will make your knee better and ASAP

Meanwhile while you recover you have Bimmerpost to kill the time.
Let me know how it goes...
-Philippe.

Went to see my physio for the first time today, we had a nice chat & went through my exercise plan. I already have more movement than before the op & this is improving as the swelling reduces.
Next physio appointment is in a fortnight.

First day of being able to partially bare weight on it today.
Pain is just a dull ache & range & ease of movement is improving.

I had my ACL (ligament) in my knee replaced (also running for over 35 years and no problems related to it), wife is a nurse and I have known a number of people that have had knee replacements.

My strong recommendation would be to do exactly what is said for the rehab as the results match the effort and time spent. While I realize you didn't have it replaced, many "bad" knee replacements come from people that get it and head to the couch. They have limited strength, limited range of motion and it bothers them forever.

With my ACL replacement they pretty much said it could get back really close to 100% or it could bother me the rest of my life, my choice on following the plan. Then, another threat, if I didn't work on it and eventually get my leg straight it was possible it would never go straight. Took almost 3 years to get it to 98% but ran a 1/2 marathon recently in a far better than average time.

Pretty good thank you Philippe.
Still a little swollen, pain has now gone & movement is getting better every day.
It's funny that every evening since taking the bandages off our dog comes & licks my bad knee, then sits with his head resting on it.

Just three more weeks (hopefully) of having to use the crutches.
