Red face Windshield replacement

Hey guys just wondering if any of you in the Edmonton area can recommend a glass place that does excellent windshield replacements on BMW. I have heard serious horror stories. I now need a new windshield as a guy by the name of "BOOTA" driving a gravel truck smashed my windshield. The rock hit so hard it smashed in 6 places, and is slowly spreading in 2 different places. I'm so scared to go to just any glass place for fear that they will scratch or damage my car in the process. The dealer says that I'm crazy to have it done anywhere else. Any help would be fantastic as my dealer is charging me $1400 to do it.

Dealer price is a complete ripoff and most dealers sub out the work anyway.

make sure they replace the cowling in front of the window correctly or it will leak onto your carpet and end up ruining your ac blower fan motor.

I was told both by the glass shop and a dealership foreman that the above is absolutely not true. Both told me the rubber around the glass is purely ornamental. The integrity completely relies on the way the glass was installed and the bead. Because dollars to donuts when it's cold, they can rarely even install a new molding perfectly. It's like trying to put a screen protector on your droid or iphone, very likely dust will get in in a couple of spots.

they are talking about the water leaking directly into the passenger compartment.

i am talking about it running down under the plastic piece beneath the wipers, then traveling through an opening in the firewall where fresh air is drawn from the microfilter to the blower fan.

bmw has a TSB service bulletin for this issue.

i don't blame your window guy because he cannot possible know every nuance of every car. our cars have a weakness in that area.

see this pic.... water goes between glass and the cowling, into the area under the microfilter, and thru the firewall into the blower fan, then your carpet. tell your dealer i said hi and that he is wrong.

here are some threads talking about the issue....

if that doesn't convince you, try this, take off the wipers, remove that cowling... and run a hose on your windshield, tell me where the water goes, here's a clue.... look at the rectangular hole in the firewall in front of the passenger that goes from the engine compartment to behind the dashboard....

That's a stupid idea. Nobody is talking about removing parts and then pouring water down the glass to see where the water goes. The cowl grille is not included in a windshield replacement. The rubber may curl up in the corners, or crack. It has nothing to do with the windshield replacement, it has to do with age.

you are so wrong. if that cowling is not seated right, it will leak. you do realize they have to remove and replace that cowling to get the windshield in. my original post said
