Pandemic product shortages

What kind of things are you experiencing shortages with?
-We have no new cars (obviously) b/c of the chip issue
-I am running into lots of back order parts, regardless of manufacturer
-Back order tints for paint mixing

Even ordered a bed room set July 4th, scheduled to come in 9/12 and got a call it wouldn't be until 12/10 now. Even that Is sketchy I fear

I had to wait almost a year to get the washer and dryer, "I wanted".

Appliance are a mess right now. You either buy what they have, wait or postpone.

EDIT: Just checked the appliances I want. ETA is now 02/2022!

This is a random thing but we ordered a fountain for our front garden in early March. It just arrived a week ago. Waiting for it to be custom stained.

The lady who owns the place where they're made said she can't keep employees. They start work and then quit.

Ordered this leather sectional with power recliners for our home theater in November 2020. We've received most of it, one of the power recliners is still on back-order, nearly a year later.

Government and COVID subsidies. Someone was telling me that people are living the highlife b/c they don't have to pay their mortgage, etc. but don't understand that deferment != doesn't have to pay. All heresy, I haven't bothered to look into it deeper.

Supposedly, Cheesecake Factory is hopping.

Did a quick search...

I have a handful of trucks sitting at the dealer or leasing company for months waiting on parts for stupid repairs.

I still can't get the KitchenAid appliances I want. I don't have an immediate need, I do have appliances but I'd rather have replaced them when I bought my house last year. I bought a GE refrigerator that looked just like the KitchenAid I wanted but the quality isn't the same. I won't order another appliance until I can get what I want.

Clients, they were eager to start a rebranding project but because of delays on their part then a major tornado that went through the area and a week later the pandemic started. Nearly two years later, I've given up on an SBA loan since I'm invisible to them even though I've been self-employed for twenty-seven years and have paid taxes all my career. Happy Monday everyone!

We ordered living room furniture in early Feb, with an 8-10 week delivery time frame. Still waiting on a lot of it, possible in November.

I am not seeing lack of inventory at Home Depot or Lowes, or ACE hardware. Noticed some similar items short at Amazon.

Wife says some food items are short supply and prices are up. TP was very expensive today when she shopped.

West coast ports are still jammed, with ships waiting offshore. Surprised the NG hasn’t been sent to help get them offloaded, but no place to store the containers awaiting truck/rail transport I suppose.

Heard on the radio this AM that TV prices are up about 10% on average. Chip shortage contributing. If you were a mfgr and could only get limited chip deliveries, which products would you produce? They’ve chosen the high margin TVs, which have higher prices. So that’s contributing.

I read over the weekend that TSLA wrote new code for the chips they could get in Q3, resulting in record car deliveries. Wonder if that will create a warranty/service issue down the road.

Motorcycles, parts and tools like lifts have been bad too. Tires arent great either.

A lot of truckers were near retirement age and a lot just bailed when covid came along and there isnt a big influx of younger people going into that industry to replace them.

We are only buying in-stock items now, not ordering anything for future delivery. Also buying and selling a lot on FB Marketplace, Nextdoor and CL. Getting better at refinishing furniture, found a great re-upholsterer with material in stock.

My friend owns a trucking company and has been struggling with drivers for a few years now. He says the new ones are a bunch of nut sacks and can barely hack it. They get a flat tire or something breaks and they sit on the side of the road calling him asking what to do. Not much in the way of forward thinking. He has to do a lot of babysitting.

Not really a shortage, but in NC a lot of the restaurants keep changing their hours or closing on random days supposedly because of staff shortage. Here in FL I saw on Nextdoor that some Boston Market by the house shut down due to staff shortage (not sure if temporary).

My friend is having a hell of a time finding parts for his motorhome.

I thought all the free money and rent had run out already?

Bought 3 kitchen appliances during the summer. It was take it or leave it or order something and wait 6 weeks or more. We really lucked out and found what we liked in stock. Many of the display spaces/slots on the showroom floor were empty!

In the grocery stores, no yeast for making home-made bread. No biggie. Also, I haven't seen bottled Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino in months.

As to restaurants, some of our favorites have reduced hours, including no breakfast hours due to lack of staffing. Our favorite restaurant has some new waitresses who are obviously new to the task.

In the electronics world, I see big shortages of high-end computer video cards and if you can find them, they are 3 to 4 times the list price. No thanks, I'll wait or go without.

In my hobby realm, prices have gone up considerably. Since most of the stuff comes from China, I imagine this is due to increased tariffs and increased freight costs. Also, it seems like half of the stuff is on perpetual back order.

So what happens to our consumer driven economy when people just say "F it" and dont want to tie their cash up for a year waiting for that sectional, bicycle, or computer. They decide instead to just live with what they have for another year while this mess sorts itself out. it's only a matter of time before the companies that have these insane lead times find their customer base drying up and sitting this out. Then we are in for the real economic crisis. This shit here, now, this is just act 2. First was plants all over the world shut down for COVID, leading to the shortages in raw materials and components. Now that global inventory of those raw materials and components are dried up, we see extended lead times in the consumer facing finished products. We are in some serious shit here. Not sure folks are seeing that yet.

Some more hearsay. Heard that the staff shortage is b/c some folks in lower paying jobs, McDonalds, food service, etc. took advantage of COVID, went back to school and are now working better paying jobs.

People were getting up to $1200 a week for over a year in unemployment benefits up until September 3 to stay home. And then the rent/mortgage moratoriums, utility bill moratoriums, child tax credits.....it goes on.

We bought a KitchenAid dishwasher to replace our old KA dishwasher that the rack broke and they wanted $400 to replace. Wife said why don't we just get a new one, ok. We didn't have to wait, got the one we wanted. A month ago it broke, still waiting on the part. It has been broken more then functional since I bought it.

People have options. The TV market expects buyers to go up in price/features/size to get a new TV, some lateral movement across brands also is possible. Other substitutions, and deferring purchases, are options for most other products. If you have to have a M8 exactly as configured, well you were going to have to wait anyway.

The difficult areas will be necessities, from fuel to food. We’re not preppers but we’re keeping more staples, soups etc than normal because we keep reading about potential shortages and seeing hints they may be coming (fresh fruit is short now, for example, and meat comes and goes). We are hoping the supply chains get moving again before any of this gets critical, but so far there is very little obvious progress.

On the labor side, one of the LabCorp/Quest blood taking vampire shops had to close because of lack of staff. The other is overwhelmed but hasn’t added any staff.

Restaurants here are closed every now and then for staffing issues, a couple have been able to run normal hours.

All the stores I go to have help wanted signs out, as does every fast food place I pass.
