Question Is a PS3 worth it?

Seriously considering the 20 gig ps3 just to play blue ray movies and the occasional game thats coming out ( GT4 HD, Gran Theft Auto, etc). I have a 360 already for all the good games, i just really want to watch blue ray movies. Is it worth it or nea?

what kinda tv do you have. I have a samsung 50" 1080P DLP TV. a 250 dollar HDMI cable, and a ps3. I have 13 Blu Ray movies, and am really disappointed. A few scenes looks awesome, mostly CGI and animated stuff. but some scenes look sooo bad. really fuzzy and snowy. my friend who works for sound advice says its because my tv is too big and i sit too close to it. its in my bedroom, but im like 6 feet away from my eyes. The very first blu ray movie i got was ricky bobby, i put the dvd in the dvd player and the blu ray in the PS3 and was switching back and forth and saw NO difference. I think i might need a better tv. like a plasma to really see the difference.

I'm doing a wait and see on the PS3. GT5's release will spur me to get one but until then....

I would wait on it personally. My roommate has a 60gb and it's cool and all but the blu-ray selection is pretty lack luster compared to HD DVD and there aren't many decent games out yet. We played it for a couple days then it's just gathered dust since we got a Wii. The GT HD demo is pretty nice though.

Honestly... blueray is not that much better than regular dvd's on a good lcd/plasma tv. as far as ps3 goes yeah its got great graphics, great online play, great games IMO clearly the best Madden on any system.. if u have the money shell it out, you really cant go wrong besides xbox 360 isnt that much cheaper at the end of the day (controllers, games, etc..)

i personally would get a stand alone blu ray player instead of the ps3. i like the pany, sony, or the pioneer. the ps3 and the samy blu ray wont upconvert standard dvd's to 1080.

Theres a noticeable difference between normal dvd and bluray. For those that say there's no difference, you need a new tv. I dont see the reason for getting a standalone bluray player other than the fact that it does 1080p upscaling from normal dvds, but even with that, I don't see any difference between normal DVDs and "upscaled" DVDs.

If 1080p is your TVs native resolution, your TV will upconvert a normal DVD to that standard. That's why you won't see much difference switching back and forth. Some TVs do it better than others, and it sounds like yours is one of those that does a 'better' job of it.

I look at the PS3 this way: A decent Blu-ray player is going to cost $800+ right now, and you can get a PS3 for around the same price or less. In my opinion they had to cut corners somewhere, and since the PS3 is designed to be a gaming system, my guess is the corners got cut on the Blu-ray side of the unit.

A $250 HDMI cable? That's baller.

DLP should look good though... 50" for sure. I have a 37" LCD connected with a $30 HDMI cable and can see a big difference between regular dvd and hd-dvd's on my xbox... and that's 1080i not even 1080p. But I'm also viewing it from a normal distance, 6ft would be close even for my 37" tv.

HDMI cables transfer digital information, they either work or they don't. You won't see any difference between a $30 HDMI cable and a $300 HDMI cable. The $300 cable won't transmit 1's and 0's any better than the $30 one.

There is a rumor that the ps3 is capable of upconverting and a future update could give us this feature. every seems pretty optimistic that it will happen sooner than later

I dont know if i agree with this. the first hdmi cable that i had my friend pick up for me was like 80 bucks or something and it said on the back that it was only capable of transfering to 1080I not to 1080P. so im guessing there ARE differences in HDMI cables.

I have 42" plasma , HDMI cables, and PS3...

HUGE difference with movies compared to DVD player, component cables, and same 42" plasma.

Maybe...you are too close.

I also just purchased an HDMI certified and tested 3M cable for $40. Do the research...cutting out the middle man (best buy, circuit city, etc) and his outrageous markups (800%-1200%) can get you the same cable without the branding and fancy hard to open plastic packaging...you're essentially paying for their training hours, displays, advertising costs, etc.

I agree that there are subtle differences, such as shielding and metallic plating and such, but is the difference really worth $xxx dollars. Personally, it isn't for me.

Digital is digital. Analog is a compeltely different platform as far as cable qualities go...just my thoughts.

And as far as the OP's question, I wouldn't buy a PS3 for that insane amount. If it were high quality dvd's I wanted to watch, I'd wait for the HDDVD/Blu Ray battle to end before I shell out $800 for a movie player. Ouch. If it's for the gaming, the PS3 is very, very nice. But again, that's a lot of money for playing video games.

Just to add to the differences between HDMI cables, the version of HDMI compatibilty also differs from older cables to newer ones...e.g. HDMI ver. 1.0/1.3 which can transmit more information/more detail/etc. Higher versions should all be backward compatible in most cases.

Companies however are not mandated to provide this info to the consumer. Do the same amount of research as you would if you wanted to buy something for your car.

The first protocol for HDMI would only source 1080i... maybe the cable was produced and packaged before 1080p was available. The cable could probably transport it, but finding a 1080p source at the time would have been difficult.
