Question Opinions of the VW Jetta Wolfsburg

My old roomate is looking for a car.
This is his first "new" car and he's coming out of a '99 Grand Am (so just about anything will be a step-up). He doesn't want to spend more then $25k, and is looking at the 2007 VW Jetta Wolfsburg.

Does anyone have any experience with the current Jetta?
I know the old one was plagued with reliability issues; and the mentality around here is that VW=problematic. He's going to be buying rather then leasing, so he wants to make sure he gets a well built car. I'm pushing him towards a Civic or Mazda 3; any suggestions?

I had a 2005 Jetta 1.8 turbo , this car is very smooth, fast and strong but a little bit heavy . I drove the new model , good thing about the new body is , it has more space in backseat .
you cant compare this car with mazda 3 or Civic . Jetta is much better .
tell your friend to lease this car , buying brand new VW is not a good idea !!

I would recommend a VW to anyone. I've never owned one myself, however.

Two weeks ago just after moving into my new place and leaving to get some grub I see a girl in the previous gen Jetta roll straight through a red light and get the whole front end taken off by an Expedition. The front bumper landed a good 20-30ft away. No one was hurt, just shaken up. If it wouldn't have been such a safe car things would have been worse.

The following Monday my friend fell asleep at 7am driving to work and rear ended a car at 40mph causing a 4 car pile up. She has a first year new-gen Jetta. $8500 worth of damage, and she wasn't even injured. She has no scars from the airbags either. The cost of repairs seems low for such a violent crash. I saw the pics and it didn't look good.

If they made RWD I would have bought a GTI in a heartbeat.

Why is the Jetta "much better"?
Yet you say buying a new Vdub is a bad move... why's that? He puts about 20k on his car each year, so he's looking to buy.

I'll suggest the GTI, GLI and Speed 3... but he's not exactly a "car person". Basically wants something to get him around town that has a few bells and whistles. He's not concerned with performance.

I know VW makes a safe car... but what's the use of all the saftey features if the car's constantly in the shop. I'm wondering on the reliability and build quality.

Try to get a Jetta 2.0T — the 200-horse turbo is V6-like, more fuel efficient and far smoother than the 2.5 five-cylinder in the Wolfsburg, which gets thrashy under pressure.

You can see my reviews of both cars here:

Well I think it's just like BMW, or any other car for that matter. You either have a good car or not. Everyone I know has had a good car. Just minor problems here and there.

GTI's are pretty versatile, I have a friend with an '02 (I think) he has taken it back and forth to work, up to Boston (from NJ), and only has had to replace worn tires so far. We play hockey together and he is able to get 3 guys w/ equipment (4-door) comfortably inside.

I've owned a 2005 Jetta, 2006 Jetta and now even have a 2006 Passat.

Truthfully VW are top notch cars. For their price range. They have great features are easy and fun cars to drive. Yes there can be issues here and there. But thats normal. Would I buy a Honda if i knew I would have no issues over a VW? Truthfully no. Safety is a huge factor to me. I'd rather live then worry about problems that might occur.

Also if he is buying it new, why worry for now? Warranty is great for a few years.
