Say hello to higher insurance premiums!

Boy just got out of an 8 car pile up - him being the 8th car. First off, he's okay. Major cuts and burns from the airbag, sore shoulder from the seat belt. They were all driving the speed limit...

For his part, since he couldn't see around the car in front of him...when the Jeep hit the car in front of them, he didn't have enough reaction time to do anything. He tried to steer clear...but probably made the impact worse. There's hardly any damage to the back of the Jeep...and that was the only car able to drive away.

In PA, as most states, beings he hit the car in front of him, this part of the accident was his fault. So I'll get dinged for his total and the damage to the back of the Jeep (guessing that's 500 to a grand.)

Jetta has to be totaled, engine oil, power steering, and coolant all left at the scene. Front end is gone, windshield, doors, airbags.

All involved were kids 18 and under just leaving high school. Lack of driving awareness at its best.

And before one of you chumps chimes in with a "this thread is worthless without pics" - I know how yinz love carnage.

Worst part - which is the same feeling my boy has right now. I've spend a year and a half customizing this thing. GLI front grill upper and lower, Audi headlights, fogs, spoiler, Pyle speakers. All that work...gone.

Just a car though...right.

Glad he’s ok.

Glad he's ok. A harsh lesson in leaving enough space. I used to run a fleet of trucks and cars, following too close contributes to so many accidents.

Glad he's ok. Sometimes they just have to learn the hard way. My son made it a whole 7 weeks with his first car before smashing into the back end of a Jeep leaving the school parking lot!

Glad to hear that your son came out of this unharmed. Very frustrating to lose the time and money spent on the car but still, as you said the important thing is that he is safe. I have gone through the same situation with both of my sons. Two cars purchased, two cars modified to their liking and two cars destroyed within months of being "finished." Unfortunately they still somehow continue to drive like they are in bumper cars.

glad he's ok, that does look like some major impact for 35 mph zone.

I wish I hadn't read this thread, as my 16 year old is leaving for school in their car. He's been driving on his own for 6 weeks.

One thing that surprised me when i got here from OZ is how close people drive to each other. leave a gap of one car length and someone jumps in it. Do that at home and you'll wear a tyre iron round your head.

I just don't understand why people don't leave space. Riding someones ass is not going to solve anything. Either pass them or just sit drastically behind them since they are bad drivers...But hey it took me to wrap myself around a pole and flip my car before I started driving safer, so maybe this is lesson learned. Make sure he understands the risk of driving a vehicle, and be glad hes okay. Life and limbs cannot be replaced.

Glad he's ok and hopefully he logs it in his driving experience memory bank. That's all that really matters.

Sorry to hear--at least his health is there. As for the car, time for an upgrade...maybe a early model M3?

So you've reached Chauffeur Freedom Day! I'll never forget the day I was no longer required to drive everyone everywhere. Enjoy and don't worry. I'm sure you trained him correctly!!

This is why I always avoid high schools when they are getting out for lunch or going home. They’re all excited to get out of there and too young to understand what can happen even at these slow speeds.

Thats a lot of damage for 35mph. Definitely not driving safely. Good he is ok but try to step making excuses for him - that doesn't help anyone involved.

This is still 100% his fault. If you can't see around a car you give them extra space. Hope you and he can see, talk about, understand, and learn from this.

Sorry about the wreck. I have 3 teenagers, so I'm feeling the premium pain too!

I was talking to a friend yesterday about their teenager. He got his driver's license two days ago and upon pulling out of the DPS parking lot, hit another car - in his mom's 6-week-old Mercedes SUV. They thought it would be easier for him to pass the test in the new car since it was smaller than dad's Ford truck. The joy of parenthood...

One of my biggest pet peeves is people driving too closely to the person in front of them for the speed they're traveling. Sooo many people do it. Just asking for it.

My favorite are the folks driving in the left lane of the highway at 70+mph with less than one cars length, texting while driving a hoopdie with faded drum brakes and no abs

Just asking for a disaster.
