Don't disagree but the new prices right now, i mean 45K all in, on road in Canada is barely gonna get you Korean let alone japanese.

It's crazy for sure, but used car prices remain high so it's a much more difficult choice (not to mention the interest rates on used cars is insane right now (it is on new as well but not nearly as bad)).

I have a 2023 SEL Tiguan & love it!
Great looking small SUV if you don't mind that 190hp ish engine. That would be the only thing I would complain if...

I have a '20 Mazda CX5 and it's certainly more refined than the CRV's and RAV4's we have in our family. However Mazda still isn't quite up there with the true luxury vehicles. Little things like the feel of the turn signal stalk and seat cushioning fall just a notch short of the German competitors.

The new BMW X1 looks really good you should def test drive it. I would choose that in this segment. The new Lexus NX looks sharp too definitely take that into consideration as well.

We could see and feel the 9k difference in the cars. The Q3 just felt more premium, better ride quality, more interior space. It also looks quite a bit sharper to our eyes.

It looks like 2020 Q3's with normal mileage still go for about 40K, so depreciation loss will probably be about 15K in 3 years.

It looks like 2020 Cx30 Gt's for for about 32K so depreciation loss is similar.

It seems like a no brainer to go for the Q3.

Are we missing anything in this analysis? Anything else in the market that comes to mind that offers a better value for a similar premium feel?
I have a family member who has a mazda 3 who convinced us to try the cx30 saying it would offer the same premium feel and drive as the Q3, but to our eyes and butts, it did not!
What does value mean? Price per…?

Why didn’t you list the Honda HR-V?

A 2019 Tig SEL Premium R-Line is in our fleet and it’s great. Space, aesthetics, Fender sound system, awesome distinctive LED headlamps, fuel economy, super easy maintenance (oil change, engine air filter, cabin filter, brakes). Great car.

i think the Q3 will hold value better because they won't make them anymore. Mazda will continue to churn out petrol cars.

not sure. buy something you don't mind living with every day. the sound system makes you happy when stuck in traffic. the lights show you the way when it's dark. driving position don't age you when you have to sit in it too long. a car that when you mash the pedal behaves they way you want it.

best overall most premium experience for least money spent
subjective to some extent I realize

but the Q3 vs cx30 example provides good context

the cx30 is 8-9k less on the road than the Q3 but offers a better overall experience

sharper looking
more premium feeling interior
superior chassis rigidity which you can feel in a more compliant and composed ride
more precision in the controls and responsiveness

in a nutshell it feels "better" and more premium and so to me it's worth the extra 8-9k and given the likely similar depreciation rates is a better value than the cx30 since in the end it won't actually cost much more than the cx30

I can't see a vehicle out there that beats the Q3 for value defined in this way

any other luxury compact suv is priced 10k more

The HRV we haven't tried out, but suspect it will also lack the premium experience offered by the Q3

The Taos? I bought an SE FWD for my mom last year. It's pretty basic, but looks and feels "nice", and consistently gives 32 mpg +, but that little 1.5L motor is a total dog despite a turbo. She loves it, but I'll take my 2018 Escape Titanium over that turtle any day!

Tiguan SEL Premium R-Line is a great vehicle. Have had one in the fleet for 4 years and it has been stellar.

We absolutely love our new Volvo XC40, but for the money, our Mazda CX-5 is probably up there with the best cars I have ever owned. Almost 110k miles, and the only issue at all was a wheel bearing at about 90k (which was cheap to fix compared to the German cars I have owned). If you are talking value, the CX-5 is seriously hard to beat.

If you are looking to spend more money though, definitely check out the XC-40.

One more half step outta the box…

Golf R/GTI. I mean really, what r you going to be SUV’ing that a hot 4 dr hatch couldn’t do 350 days of the year. IMO, entry level SUV’s should really consider taking “sport” out of their DNA…err mktg.

If you must, at that price point- I’m a Toyota guy. Passed along Land Cruiser to kids and Highlander in family as well. Absolutely fukin bulletproof. I hear and read good things about Mazda…would def. be on my radar if I were in the market.

Buy what you like! Good luck and summer. B.
