IMSA and GRAND-AM to Bring DTM Racing to USA. Would Include Japanese Super GT Cars
BIMMERPOST NEWS IMSA and GRAND-AM to Bring DTM Series to USA. Would Include Japanese Super GT Series Exciting news for auto racing fans, including BMW Motorsports fans. GRAND-AM Road Racing and the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), which administers the popular German DTM racing series, have entered into a cooperation agreement to bring a version of DTM to North America. The earliest the new series would begin would be 2015. If this comes to fruition, not only would we see BMW DTM cars racing against Audi and Mercedes DTM in North America, but also again Japanese Super GT cars from Honda, Nissan and Toyota, and American manufacturers' entries. This news comes via DTM.com Quote:

I'd also like to see them include the V8 Supercars from Australia. It would be interesting to see how they would give some parity between the DTM and Japanese Super GT cars, the specs are pretty different, what specs would the North American manufacturers adopt, DTM, Super GT or a hybrid, GM could always use a Chevy badged Commodore Super V8.

The theory behind this new series is that the German and Japanese manufactures are already investing R&D into their respective series so having a team or two in a US series shouldn't cost much more. Super excited for this and hope that it is fully realized. |

This. DTM is basically the German version of NASCAR, at least in terms of how the cars are put together. Still, I'd much rather watch this than NASCAR. I'd rather watch a goldfish bowl than NASCAR.

There was some discussion in the other thread, but with the alms/grand am merger partly because they weren't viable on their own (at least that's what I thought), it doesn't quite make sense to introduce another competing series.
And not that familiar with Super GT, but I think the gt300 class would be the one I'd be most interested in. It would be nice if some the gt300 cars like the SLS and R8 could be assimilated into ALMS gt. |

Seems pretty cocky. Maybe ALMS/Grand Am ought to get their collective shit together with the impending merger and establish themselves as the premier sports car racing franchise in North America before they take on a rather pedestrian European/Japanese side show. The cars look impressive, but do not represent the pinnacle of the sport. Do we really need to import a support series? Taking into account the date of this press release, I don't see this happening.

I wouldn't be too sure about that my friend.
I remember going to California Speedway at Fontana CA back in 2004 for the Japanese GT and Touring Car Championship. It was a great time.
