Any VA drivers changing exhaust with new law in effect?

Anyone in VA going back to stock exhaust with the coming changes in exhaust law and enforcement? Or avoiding modifying exhaust because of the changes.

It has always been illegal under state inspection law to change to an exhaust that makes the vehicle noisier than stock. More like a joke. Ever seen a Harley with a stock exhaust?

Yes, but now it can be enforced solely on its own and not as part of some other primary offense. Virginia is making it easier to ticket loud exhaust and
Is doing so for a reason. Significantly because of public complaints. So this is a notable development.

Boy am I glad I don't live in Virginia. Who keeps getting these laws passed out there?

The new law in Virginia is a repeal of the 2020 law. It basically goes from a secondary offense to a primary offense.

People that want to sleep at night and don’t want to hear fart cans in a residential neighborhood. Go blame those idiots that don’t respect other people’s peace and quiet.

Though I am an automotive enthusiast, I agree. The loudness of exhaust and people running catless was really getting out of hand. It's a common story, the excesses of a minority ruined it for the rest, but there was ample reason for action and the State government was responding to citizen's complaints.

It has always been a point of failure in a State Inspection if the exhaust has been modified, but it has never stopped anyone I know from passing inspection. Let me know when you see a cop stop a Harley on straight pipes. Or a pickup truck raised beyond bumper height limits. It's like an unholy fraternity where cops won't stop anyone with a domestic pickup with tires poking out way beyond the fenders, Harleys with straight exhaust, or Corvettes without front license plates. Just don't expect the same "courtesy" if you're in an M3.

I live in south FL and our state is about to start enforcing excessive noise from exhaust and car audio. Every night we can sit in our backyard and hear numerous cars and bikes accelerating hard through 3-4 gears on 40-45 mph roads maybe 1 - 1 1/2 miles from us. It can sometimes completely drown us out.

On any given day, a Mustang or AMG GT with open exhaust or someone with a 2000w sub will overwhelm every car waiting at a light.

It really can be mind-boggling how much disregard some people have for others. Hopefully Florida law enforcement targets these people and leave the mild exhaust and loud but unobtrusive music people alone. But as was said above it is the entitled few that f it up for everyone else

I agree that asymmetric enforcement as well as non-enforcement is problematic. I do hope it helps address the most egregious offenders in my local area, but I understand that law enforcement has issues bigger than my personal gripes to deal with.

I am an automotive enthusiast as well and love a good sounding exhaust, but we leave somewhat near a major route and right when our newborn needs to go sleep every night at 7PM some idiots on motorcycles start racing up and down the road and it's usually this nasty, extremely loud, piercing sound, I have just about had it. Every night...

My car has the M Performance exhaust, and that seems to walk the line between performance and loudness. And many of the newer cat back exhaust have the ability to electronically open baffles/exhaust port so you can stay quiet in neighborhoods and open it up on less populated stretches.

Recently I was headed up to the C&C at Dulles Landing, and could hear the exhaust of what turned out to be a Mustang at least 1 mile behind me before I could see it.

To me, that is completely disrespectful of others, and IMHO for that scenario, it should be a primary offense, and not just in the great state of VA.

I'm very thankful the 2020 law was repealed. I always have an aftermarket exhaust on my vehicles, but the real issue is Civics/Chargers/shitbox 335s running what sounds like no catback.

I love cars, and I love a nice-sounding exhaust, but like many have said, it's gotten out of hand. So since we, as enthusiasts, can't control ourselves, laws must be passed. It's our own fault.
