Picked up my first mechanical watch

After reading many threads here (with loads of useful information from @tony20009 I might add) and on various other dedicated watch forums, I found a great looking and affordable mechanical watch to start out my collection.

Hamilton Khaki Field automatic

The watch came on a nice brown leather band, and I also picked up a black leather band from Hadley Roma which is pictured. I absolutely love the look of white on black with the dial, and the contrasting stitching on the band. I still would like to pick up an Omega Seamaster at some point, though this should tide me over for a little while.

Congrats. Hamilton is solid. Here's my Khaki auto chrono. It's about 10 years old and I still wear it regularly. I think you're going to be very happy with your purchase.

Excellent choice. I've found Hamilton to be a great gateway drug.

Thanks guys. That Khaki Field chrono looks fantastic on a steel band.

It doesn't really have anything to do with your particular comment. The OP started a thread about Hamilton watches. And this is a clip that mentions Hamiltons.

Oh, okay. That works for me. Wasn't sure since my comment was quoted with your video as the reply. No sweat. I get it now.

I did laugh at the vid. I guess that's what it was for.

All the best.

Haha. Yeah, sorry for the confusion. There was no point to be had there.

I recently got a Hamilton Jazzmaster day date. Any idea how long these should last on a "full wind?" Mine stops over a weekend after wearing all week. Is this normal?

Sounds normal. The power reserve is around 40 hours so if you don't wear the watch over the weekend it will run out of power and stop. If you want to keep it running, buy a watch winder. Brookstone has several models that are very good inexpensive entry models...

Yep. That's correct. My watches have power reserves that range from 38 - 50 hours. So most of them wouldn't make it thru the weekend. Here's a stock photo of the winder that I use. It's a Wolf and I absolutely love it.

Yes, Wolf makes very nice winders! I was trying to start RedDotRacer off slowly, more entry level. Ultimately you can end up spending as much for the winder as you do for the watch, if not more!

I saw an add in a watch magazine recently. It was for a watch winder that doubles as a vault for 3 watches. Wasn't much larger than the Wolf (shown above). Price tag was like $35,000! LOL. I got the wolf triple winder for less than $300 on sale.

Wow didn't realize a winder cost so much. I wasn't sure if my watch had been sitting on a shelf for a while before I bought it and the mechanics dried out. If it's normal, than I won't worry about it. Thank you for the suggestions on the winders. Love this watch.

It's all about what you're willing to spend! Brookstone has a single watch winder for $99. As owen points out, you can likely find the Wolf winders on sale for a similar price.

If you wear the watch all the time, a winder is likely not needed. Winding and resetting on Monday morning is not a big deal in my view. But for idiots like me who have multiple watches, a winder is required to keep my watches ready to wear.

+1. Add me to the "idiot" category

I've actually been downsizing my collection lately. My goal is to get down to just 3 watches, all kept in the Wolf winder. Wish me luck!

One needs to have goals, good luck! Not sure I could do it myself... Maybe someday.
