When your BMW doesn't compare

First off, I love my 440i. It's a great car and has been trouble free since I picked it up. Fast, fun (manual, duh), and great-looking. It's not perfect, and I still miss a few things about my old 5-series, but no car is perfect

My father has a 2012 Mercedes CLS63 AMG. Every once in awhile, I take the AMG out for a day or two to run a few errands...
When I tell you that it doesn't compare to my f32. The Mercedes' is simply (and obviously) in a different class. Better across the board in nearly every facet, and definitely in the ones that matter (engine, steering feel, presence, build quality)

I get back in my 440i and I'm left underwhelmed. This feeling obviously subsides, as I'm still driving an amazing car that MSRP'ed for $60,000, but when comparing it to a $100k AMG when new (and that has aged magnificently), it makes me doubt my dream car of an f80 M3 in favour of a big, roaring yet comfortable V8 like in the M5 or f06 M6. That $40k gap also goes insanely far...

Anybody else have experiences like these? It doesn't have to be leaving your BMW. It can be getting into one as well

interesting because when I was shopping and tested the the 2014 BMW 4 series coupe against the 2014 Mercedes E -class coupe ( I believe the Mercedes e-class chassis was C-class sourced to some extent ). I thought the BMW was very bit as equal to the Mercedes which I thought the Mercedes would be obviously superior.

Take a BMW six-cylinder 5-series or M5 and compare to your fathers car.

unfair fight. CLS63 is an amazing machine but youd need an M5 or M6 to compare.

The M3/M4 is quite a bit different than the base model cars. My f30 335 sucked, i sold it after 9 months. I've had my f80 for 3 years.

its not really fair to compare new vs used.

All the time. One of my friends for example drives a C43 coupe which is very fast/loud and leaves me in the dust in a straight line. He gets cocky about it, but it doesn't bother me since I know it's a numb heavy boat that can't turn to save its life. In a canyon I'd smack the shit outta him.

There will be somebody who has a nicer car. Whether it be price, acceleration, handling, interior, etc. I'm content with the cars I've had though, as they have all been very fulfilling in their own way. Also have to remember that ultimately it's just a car and shouldn't define you. Plenty of very wealthy people are driving cars that are not as nice as yours.

Agree it's not a fair fight but in addition to comparing a base model to AMG, you are also comparing a 2012 vehicle to a current vehicle.

Have you driven older BMWs? Not sure how old you are. In 2012 we still had hydraulic steering, now it's electric. When you closed the doors on an older model, they were solid and heavy. Now they try to reduce the weight and the doors feel like a tin can. I could go on, but you get the idea.

As time marches on, I think the BMW's circa 2010ish will be looked up extremely favourably. A shame the two stock engines both had issues but fundamentally the cars are quite analogue but still feel modern. We had an X1 and X3, I think 2012 and 2013's and they were very good cars other than the shitty water pumps.

I went from Hondas to BMW E46 in 2001 and that’s exactly how it felt. BMW was solid. Well made. Not buzzy. The luxurious smells and textures of the interior. The suppleness of the chassis. The creamy smoothness of the engine. That telepathic connection with my hands and eyes. I can go on.

Now BMW still has most of those attributes, to be fair. It’s definitely lost that telepathic connection even as it overwhelms with performance. It still has most of the other good stuff. But when i stepped to Porsche, and then McLaren, those cars redefined driving enjoyment for me. Also not a fair comparison, but I’m answering the topic of the thread.

Bingo, my 09 m3 is a joy to drive with the hydraulic steering - feel very connected to the road. Nailed in on the doors, heavy as hell. I did see a member recently install a soft close system on his e90 m3 though, that was pretty neat and innovative.

Agree with bulk of the comments, they're too different to compare.

Eh, I think the forum over exaggerates the issues associated with the e9x M line. I'd say only a small percentage of the SX5 engines (S65 or 85) were affected, but you definitely hear that message loud and clear if you venture of to the Engine section of the E9x M3 forum. They call it the german lottery - all has to do with the tolerances associated with the block, bearings, and rods. With a bad combination of the 3 you could end up with rod bearing clearance issues and "oil starvation" - unfortunately the only way to know is to open up the block. I'm not going to get into main bearings as that is just a crap shoot haha. Other issues like throttle actuators and fuel breather valves are easy fixes - $1200 and 4hrs (less if you've done it before) and you can knock out all replacements yourself as the labor is cake.

Go for F80! Fit it with some BBSs and I guarantee you you won't drool over your dad’s CLS63 again!

Electric steering doesn't suck...BMW is just really really crappy at doing it.

Agreed! Steering on my son' MK7 Golf feels much better than on any modern BMW I've tried. While it's too light it does provide some feedback and the steering wheel does go back and forth on its own when driving on uneven road.

PS: I haven't tried M2 or G80 M3/M4 I have to admit..

Lol. Well duh🤣 I have to say, the best car I have driven is my buddies 2018 Miami Blue GT3. Sure, my 458 gets more attention and sounds a bit better than the GT3. But that car with the manual, sound and handling is just heaven. As long as he keeps it, I can drive it pretty much whenever I want😄. OP, you do a few mods to that 08 turbo and that will be a bad bitch!!

First off, I love my X3M. It's a great car and has been trouble free since I picked it up. Fast, fun (tuned to 750 bhp, duh), and great-looking. It's not perfect, and I still miss a few things about my old F82, but no car is perfect

I also have few other cars, incl. an Abyss Black 2021 McLaren 720s. Every once in awhile, I take the Mac out for a day or two to run a few errands...
