A 20-Year Old Civic Si has Sold for $50k!

You read that title right, a 20-year old 2000 Honda Civic Si (EM1-Generation) with over 5k miles has sold on Bring-a-Trailer for $50k The EM1 Si only came in three colors and sold for two model years and included the 1.6L B16A2 Inline-Four engine with a 5-speed Manual Transaxle. Now, while I'm sure that it is a good car, and surprisingly kept in stock condition despite being an Si, I can't help but think that $50k is an absurd amount of money to spend on a 20-year old Civic Si of all cars. I mean, the winning bid is so shocking that this Civic Si in particular has garnered so much press and headlines from automotive news sources.

Never ever ever. It's a clean car, but even nostalgia couldn't get me interested at that price.

No thanks.
I'd rather put that money in getting a nice 2 series vert in one of the M versions.

High rev N/A cars are certainly being sought after but, $50k for this make and model is a bit much. If I were an old school Civic fanboy, I could see spending $25k for this example.

I believe this was bought by matt at obsessed garage. Hes got a whole series on youtube of what hes doing with this car. Then its gonna become a giveaway car. Dont understand how someone can justify spending this kind of money on a car like that put $100k in mods in it and then give it away. It just boggles my mind

Buyer didn't spend $50k on a 20-year old Civic. Buyer spent $50k because of sentimental value.

I worked at a Honda dealership when that car was new. I sold them. They were, for a normal Honda, the best of the best. Much like the original 1997 Acura Integra Type R in Championship White, a real Civic Si (not just an appearance package anymore) in Electron Blue Pearl was special.

So yeah, I get it. If you have the money, why not preserve history?

These are the cars that NORMAL guys could dream of. Not the NSX, that was too far away. Not the Porsche 911, or the Ferrari 355, those were off the table.

This was the bottom level of dreams.

I'd love to have one.

I get why people have sentimental value for cars like these, the base line cars were more enthusiast oriented back in the day...

However; there was an article i read where they compared an new Civic to one of these older SI models and the older SI model was fun for about 15 minutes before you realize its a 20 year old car... the new car blew it away in every way.

Consider you can have a modern Civic Type R for 35K... again, not sure who would make the decision for the above, it's at best a $5k car.

Yeah. Whenever I yearn for the car of my dreams as a youth I realize any car I've had in the last 20 years beats it like a red headed step child. My dream car? 67 Camaro with 4 speed and 327 engine. I realize it's all the memories and the fact my body was so much better than the current model.

The Integra Type R was certainly special. I saw one at a local autocross. Those guys beat the piss out of it banging the engine off the rev limiter and it just ran. They had 3 to 4 guys...can't remember...as part of their team. They ran that car in all the day's heats...one guy per heat. So the car didn't get much rest/down time. I was there with an ex-gf at the time and happened to mention the car as being a Type R as we walked by. One of the guys heard me and said...."Yeah....it's a REAL Type R". This was in reference to all the fake badging that was going on then.

REALLY?

I can see paying $50K for an old NSX with average miles but no way in hell will I ever shell out that kind of a money for an old Civic. I've owned 2 of them when they were brand new in the 80's and 90's

They were nice cars for sure but not once have I ever dream about them.

Cult following + high(er) end items. I'm not an obsessive "OGer" but all the items i've bought from his store are definitely the best of the best, and the quality shows. Its nice having someone do all the vetting on your behalf, and all you do is click "buy"

I immediately thought of the OG connection as well but I don't believe it is the same one as he has been posting mod progress on his for some time and this one just sold in stock condition.

You know, funny, I was thinking the exact same thing. I was 13 when these came out, all I could think was, "man in a couple of years I can actually get one!"

My dad had a close friend - his son picked up a black EM1 brand new, it was a real early model. Had a bunch of goodies on it. I remember drooling over it.

As far as the price, yea that's crazy, but then again we've seen E30 M3s being listed at well over 100k in the past few years.

82k for this 6k mile 97 Integra Type R. Comparatively the Si at 50k makes somewhat sense.

However to me, the R is worth something (not 82k but certainly 30-40k) not the civic. The 160hp was fun to rev but it just wasnt enough. The rest of the car was base civic. The R's B18C5 was miles better and the car was a complete package.
