MJ vs Kobe
Hi all,
I was doing some searching and found this (I hope this isn't a re post). I think there is NO argument who is a better player. MJ was superior pretty much in every category. One exception might be that Kobe was a better 3 point shooter. And the gap between them gets wider in playoffs AND even more in finals where the greatness is measured. This doesn't make Kobe a bad player, but not as good as MJ, not even close. IMO, the major difference between them is that MJ was a much better defender and a leader. And MJ's numbers would have been better if it wasn't for his 2 year farewell with Washington Here it is. Enjoy http://swishnba.com/2013/06/07/kobe-...13-comparison/ MVP: Kobe: 1 – Second in MVP voting once, third in MVP voting three times MJ: 5 – Second in MVP voting 3 times, third in MVP voting twice Championships: Kobe: 5 MJ: 6 Finals MVP: Kobe: 2 MJ: *6 – only player to win 3 straight Finals MVPs multiple times (Shaq did it from 00-02) DPOY (Defensive Player of the Year) Kobe: 0 – finished 3rd once MJ: 1 – finished top 5 seven times ROTY: (Rookie of the Year) Kobe: 0 MJ: 1 – As a rookie MJ led his team in points, rebounds, assists and steals Scoring Champion: Kobe: 2 – led the league in total points scored 4 times MJ: *10 – led the league in total points scored 11 times Steals Champion: Kobe: 0 MJ: 3 Scoring Title and MVP in the same season Kobe: 0 MJ: *5 – (88, 91, 92, 96, 98) Scoring Title and Steals title in the same season Kobe: 0 MJ: *3 – (88, 90, 93) Scoring Title and DPOY in the same season Kobe: 0 MJ: *1 – (88) – The year MJ won DPOY he led the league in steals (total and average) and points (total and average) Scoring Title and Finals MVP in the same season Kobe: 0 MJ: *6 – only player to do this multiple times. – (91-93, 96-98) Scoring Title, MVP and Finals MVP in the same season Kobe: 0 MJ: *4 – (91, 92, 96 & 98) MVP and Finals MVP in the same season Kobe: 0 MJ: *4 – (91, 92, 96 & 98) MVP, All Star MVP and Finals MVP in the same season Kobe: 0 MJ: *2 – only person to do it multiple times Season Totals Games Played: Kobe: 1239 MJ: 1072 Minutes played: Kobe: 45,390 MJ: 41,011 Seasons over 2000 points Kobe: 8 MJ: 11 Seasons over 2500 points Kobe: 1 MJ: 6 Seasons over 2750 points Kobe: 0 MJ: 3 Seasons over 3000 points Kobe: 0 MJ: 1 Seasons over 50 blocks Kobe: 4 MJ: 8 Seasons over 75 blocks Kobe: 0 MJ: 4 Seasons over 100 blocks Kobe: 0 MJ: 2 Seasons over 100 steals Kobe: 11 MJ: 12 Seasons over 150 steals Kobe: 2 MJ: 9 Seasons over 200 steals Kobe: 0 MJ: 6 Seasons over 250 steals Kobe: 0 MJ: 1 Seasons over 200 steals and 100 blocks Kobe: 0 MJ: *2 – only person to do it multiple times (Pippen and Hakeem did it once each) Seasons over 300 assists Kobe: 13 MJ: 12 Seasons over 400 assists Kobe: 5 MJ: 7 Seasons over 500 assists Kobe: 0 MJ: 2 Seasons over 600 assists Kobe: 0 MJ: 1 Seasons over 400 rebounds Kobe: 9 MJ: 12 Seasons over 450 rebounds Kobe: 2 MJ: 7 Seasons over 500 rebounds Kobe: 2 MJ: 6 Seasons over 550 rebounds Kobe: 1 MJ: 2 Seasons over 600 rebounds Kobe: 0 MJ: 1 Seasons over 650 rebounds Kobe: 0 MJ: 1 Seasons over 40% shooting Kobe: 17 MJ: 15 Seasons over 45% shooting Kobe: 12 MJ: 12 Seasons over 46% shooting Kobe: 7 MJ: 11 Seasons over 47% shooting Kobe: 0 MJ: 10 Seasons over 48% shooting Kobe: 0 MJ: 10 Seasons over 49% shooting Kobe: 0 MJ: 8 Seasons over 50% shooting Kobe: 0 MJ: 6 Seasons over 51% shooting Kobe: 0 MJ: 6 Seasons over 52% shooting Kobe: 0 MJ: 4 Seasons over 53% shooting Kobe: 0 MJ: 3 Seasons under 25% from 3 Kobe: 0 MJ: 6 Seasons shooting over 25% from 3 Kobe: 17 MJ: 9 Seasons shooting over 30% from 3 Kobe: 15 MJ: 6 Seasons shooting over 31% from 3 Kobe: 13 MJ: 6 Seasons shooting over 32% from 3 Kobe: 12 MJ: 5 Seasons shooting over 33% from 3 Kobe: 8 MJ: 5 Seasons shooting over 34% from 3 Kobe: 7 MJ: 5 Seasons shooting over 35% from 3 Kobe: 4 MJ: 5 Seasons shooting over 36% from 3 Kobe: 3 MJ: 5 Seasons shooting over 37% from 3 Kobe: 2 MJ: 4 Seasons shooting over 38% from 3 Kobe: 1 MJ: 2 Seasons shooting over 40% from 3 Kobe: 0 MJ: 1 Seasons shooting over 50% from 3 Kobe: 0 MJ: 1 Regular Season (per game): Points per game: Kobe: 25.5 MJ: *30.1 Rebounds per game: Kobe: 5.3 MJ: 6.2 Assists per game: Kobe: 4.8 MJ: 5.3 Steals per game: Kobe: 1.5 MJ: 2.3 Blocks per game: Kobe: 0.5 MJ: 0.8 FG% Kobe: .454 MJ: .497 FT% Kobe: .838 MJ: .835 3PT% Kobe: .336 MJ: .327 Turnovers per game: Kobe: 3.0 MJ: 2.7 Clutch: Kobe: 46 for 155 (29.7%) MJ: *33 for 58 (56.9%) Regular Season (advanced metrics): PER: (Player Efficiency Rating – A measure of per minute production) Kobe: 23.4 (19th all time) – Finished third once, fifth four times and sixth twice MJ: *27.9 (1st all time) – Finished first seven times, second three times and fourth once WS/48 (Win Shares per 48 minutes) – An estimate of the number of wins contributed by a player per 48 mins – league average is approximately .100) Kobe: .183 (29th all time) – Finished fourth once, seventh once and 8th in the league four times MJ: *.250 (1st all time) – Finished first eight times, second once and third twice. Kobe will retire with 3 championships led by another guy...
MJ retired with 6 with a 2 year intermission led by himself. Mj can't really be compared to anyone in professional sports, much less basketball. Also, remember that he was in the NBA at a time when it exploded on a global level and was at it's height, then factor in the entire Air Jordan legacy, the dunk contest, the defensive wins and the all star wins as well as the Dream Teams (that were at the time legendary). |

Barking up the wrong tree. I don't watch any sports except F1, which I'm barely hanging onto.

MJ missed two full years in his prime, and still came back as the best in the game. His competitive drive was more than most anyone. He got a ton of calls but he was not the whiny bitch Kobe seems to be.

As I said Kobe is a great player. And he could have been even better player if it wasn't for his gigantic ego...
Nevertheless, it is unfair for both MJ and Kobe to be compared to each other bc MJ is from a league where there is no one else...Kobe is just another great player, which is not bad at all... |

well said. No one honestly can compare to MJ. Stats might be close but the legacy of MJ is still far beyond kobes.

I'm not being an argumentative jerk here, but Jordan didn't exactly miss a whole two years. He wasn't quite himself when the Bulls lost to the Magic in the playoffs in that second year (1995), but he was still there. I'll never forget watching MJ bounce that ball of his foot near the end of the game, it was the first time he ever looked human to me.

Yeah people don't realize that most of the effort spent surfing is just getting out there and catching the wave. If you spend three hours in the water you probably spend a few minutes actually riding the waves. And that's the art of it, what makes great surfers, knowing where to go, what wave to go for.
