My car stolen off BMW dealership service lot..

Whats up guys?

So long story short... I live in Denver and left my 335 in San Diego at a friends house so she can look after it for me. My lease on it is up the 24th of this month. She dropped it off at the dealership on Friday for the service and pre turn in inspection. Went to go pick it up Monday (yesterday).. 45 mins later they came out and say they couldn't find it.

Was on phone with police forever, car was stolen sometime between Friday-Monday right from the dealership.

It was a dealership in San Diego so if anyone sees a Black E90 335 with coupe wheels on it let me know.

Now just waiting to see what is going to happen. I'll keep you guys posted on what happens.

btw this is Charlie (changed my name)

Sucks. I'm an insurance agent and have had this happen to a few clients. Seems like theifs target shops/dealerships occasionally, but I'm always curious if it's an employee of the shop since there never seems to be forced entry. Who else would know how to get in/out without getting caught on security cameras?...

Wow sucks to hear that and you would think that would be the last place it would get stolen. So who pays? your insurance or theirs if you can't find it. Are they liable for thefts because they may not have put it in a safe place?

I'm not a lawyer, but I would think that once the dealership is handed the keys, the car becomes their responsibility and their insurance takes the hit. You may be very lucky in that you were turning the car in anyway so they may just close you out as if there are no issues (on your side). If you do have any problems with them, research whether there have been other reported car thefts from their property. One would expect a BMW dealership to have fairly good security.

What does one do with a stolen car these days anyhow? Other then joy ride and total it, I can't see much use in stealing a car since it can't be registered and you'd be arrested if pulled over. Would a newer 335i even be useful at a chop shop?

As an insurance agent myself, and someone who has also been in the car business for several years, most of the time its an inside job. It's just so easy from the inside to make something like that work out.

Most likely it will be the OP's insurance that will handle it. I'm yet to see a shop take responsibility for something like this. OP, I would first and formost see if the shop will cover it or if you can file a claim through their business policy. If that doesn't work out, file a claim through your own insurance. You'll have to cover your Comprehensive deductible (why it would be nice if the shop covered it) and your company will probably give it a couple weeks time ebfore they pay out to see if the car shows up somewhere. This will probably be a hastle for your lease trade-in, but I'm sure they'll be sympathetic seeing as it was stolen from their premises.

It would be incredible useful. Parts can be salvaged from practically any vehicle, and well-selling cars are most popular because they're easy to get rid of the parts. The 3 series is the best selling car out there, so parts would be scooped up by folks like yourself for half the normal price very quickly. People also put fake VINs on vehicles and put them back on the street.

That's insane. Though I find it hard to believe it was just stolen at random, almost sounds like an inside job of some sort. I'd avoid that dealer like the plague after this.

All in all, I guess the timing is pretty good since your lease is up in a couple of weeks. If it had to happen, probably the best time.
