Georgetown University Proposing Slavery Reparations Fee

https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2019...-a-student-fee

You cannot make this BS up..

"Students at one of the most prestigious colleges in the country will soon vote on whether to fine themselves in order to pay benefits to the descendants of slaves sold by the university more than 181 years ago."

Although a small amount, nevertheless I feel my sympathy for the student loan “crisis” slipping...

Sure but the absurdity behind it is hilarious.

Pay tuition to go to college. Get guilt tripped into believing that somehow you had something to do with slavery. Then tax yourself for it..

Well, people do dumb shit every day. It's their money, so I'm not going to get excited over it.

Since the UNIVERSITY owned slaves, and it's a private university, shouldn't that come out of THEIR pockets, not the current/future students?

Is Fauxcahontus getting any reparations?

I would say yeah.. Do what you want with your money but don't guilt trip your students into your agenda.

There is no student loan crisis, their a stupity crisis, AOC is a perfect example of this, why did she attend college just to become a bartender and an elected offical? Neither profession need an over price piece of paper. On top of that as someone who has hire quite a few people running my company I've come to the conclusion judging people on a college degree is worthless and I should only judge them on their real experience and drive.

I am going to avoid talking about the actual subject and discuss the efficiency. This is one of our top universities and they spent months coming up with a structure and voting on this.

They could have spent an hour coming up with a good gofundme page and moved on.

Shit like this just keeps proving the point that today universities are a waste of time and money. Come in with a clear head and leave woke, broke, and unemployable. Then go and vote for someone the likes of AOC to bail you out.

Anyone in here black?

Georgetown, a private Catholic institution, has attempted to make amends over the past few years for its historical connection to slavery. In 1838, the school sold 272 slaves to pay off its debts. In April 2017, it officially apologized for the sale of human beings.

I'm going to start off by saying I am not assuming anyone's race, your intent for asking the question, or your point of view on the issue, and my tone in my response is not hostile or attacking anyone, just trying to contribute to the conversation With that said...

With all due respect, what does being black have to do with this? Slavery was abolished in the US in 1865, 154 years ago. I can say with 100% confidence that absolutely nobody who is alive in this country today has been a slave, or a child of a slave as a result of the U.S. slave trade prior to the Civil War. We're talking grandparents of grandparents at the very least at this point. The reason I am bringing this up is because I don't see how a black person has anything more valuable to contribute to this conversation than anyone else does. Anyone can "imagine" being a slave. Which means all people can relate to the issue equally.

Yes, slavery was terrible. It's a great thing it was abolished. 154 years ago. But I don't see what this fee is supposed to accomplish besides giving money to essentially a random subset people based on an arbitrary condition that was met. Almost like pre-selecting lottery winners. Which is why this fee is ridiculous, and that's not even getting into issues like who to collect from, how much to collect, and how to determine to whom and how much to pay out.

From article:

The Georgetown student government recently announced a campus-wide referendum on whether to establish a fund for the descendants of 272 men, women and children sold by the university in 1838.

Doesn't seem too random.

What is really scary is that this mindset will soon be running things here in the US.

Shall I demand the Italian, german and the Muslims to pay me a decedent hardship fee from the days of the Roman Empire, Visigoth invasion and Muslim Invasion?
Heck let's toss the French in from the Nap days and the. British from raiding our ships and burn a ton of them in the canal.

Do whatever you want. Get enough people to agree, and you’ll get your “decedent hardship fee”.

The point is: first, this is a matter for a private institution (so it affects pretty much none of you, unless you’re a Georgetown student), and second, they’re looking to put to a vote, which means it still needs consensus. People put head-scratching measures for referendum at all state and local government elections all the time, liberals and conservatives alike. Why you chose to focus on this one is in itself an oddity.

Edit: Here’s the irony: All of you rip AOC to shreds when she proposes a 70% tax on the super-wealthy (because they shouldn’t be penalized for earning their money and should be allowed to spend it as they desire), then you rip Georgetown about how they decide to spend their money.
