Nikkor 10-24 vs Tokina 11-16

Evening fellas,

I'm having a difficult time deciding between these two lenses, and wanted to see what you thought of them...the speed (and price) of the Tokina is attractive, but the range...and vice versa with the Nikkor.

Anyone have experience with both?

The price is quite a bit I think, I shoot Canon but I bought the Tokina 11-16 2.8

Also when I did a side by side with the Canon vs Tokina the quality was very very close.

I personally would go for the Tokina because of the F2.8 abuility. because they are such wide angle lenses, it doesn't take much to get a lot of things in focus changing F stop minimally, so, I'd go for the one that allows you more light over one that doesn't

shooting at 5.6 indoors is hard when using natural light. and with the Nikkor, you're stuck at 5.6 at some zoom levels... so it will limit your creativity and abilities to use the glass sucessfully in some circumstances.

that's just my opinion, i use a 2.8 16-35mm on my 5D which is about equivilent to 10-24 on a crop body camera. I really like having the faster lens especially after my experiences with the 17-40 F4 i had before it.

5.6 is almost impossible to shoot indoors with anything that is moving.

agreed with all the above posts...the tokina is a much faster lens for less money. I'm actually on the waiting list for the tokina, it's so hard to find one for a Canon

Well, after a little more poking around the net, the build quality and speed swayed me to go with the Tokina. I did order it through Adorama, but of course it's backordered. Someday I'll be able to actually put a lens on my recently received (also through Adorama) Nikon. *sigh*

The Nikkor is in stock, so if after a bit the Tokina doesn't ship, I'll switch.

I wouldn't switch, the speed of the Tokina is worth the time spend waiting.

Spent about 45 minutes discussing faster lenses with a buddy today.

He hates that the only lens he has faster then a 3.5 is his 50mm 1.8 It's made him want other lenses because of the effects he can create with the wider aperature.

He has also played with a lot of my lenses, many of which are constant aperature openings through their whole zoom range (2.8 for two of them and 4 for another)

He pointed out at the last car show that none of his lenses were fast enough to shoot an orange lamborgini on black background in low light except for his 50mm 1.8, which made him realize that most of his lenses are useless for the kinds of indoor shooting he would like to do.

going to that 2.8 will be a life changer for you, so if you don't stick it out for it, i think you will be disappointed.

yeah, F2.8 @ 1100-1600 ISO indoors with limited lighting works perfectly when using a D700 or D7000. you can get away with that all day.

You are going to have a lot of grain, shoot 2.8 with a external flash + defuser / in a box / bounced off something. And you will have much better photo's

The distortion is quite unattractive. If you want to have things bend, buy a fisheye.

Also all the sigma glass I have ever owned seemed to be very cheap.

You appear to be unfamiliar with the lens - it's rectilinear and, therefore, does not cause straight lines to bend.
