Again, the implication about Buddhism is that it was small versus the aforementioned "Big Three" Abrahamic religions.
It's more like big two. The biggest being #1 Christianity (2.2 billion) and #2 Islam (1.6 billion). Judaism (14 million) is very small - way smaller than Buddhism (300 million).

Part of the reason is because belief in Buddhism is shrinking. It is not as aggressive as other religions in recruiting people.

The Big 3 is referred to as such because of all of them stemming from the common Abrahamic roots....not because of numbers at the individual level.

Point taken, but we still can't even agree on basics.
Is it necessary that we agree? I know I didn't begin posting in this thread with the expectation of bringing anyone to adopt my view on the matter. I'm just participating in a conversation as far as I know. I'm willing to share my thinking on the matter, but I have neither need nor desire to "convert" others to my position.

All the best.

No, it's not necessary.

If we agreed, there wouldn't be any discussion

I enjoy posting my thoughts on the matter as well, this has turned into a pretty long thread.

Would I like to see everyone become a Christian? yes, of course.
Am I going to force it down your throat? No, most definitely not.

It's all in the past folks just let it go. Do your best in life to be a good person and you should be fine. You don't have to belong to one flock or another or go to a special building to accomplish this. Imagine all the Sundays you'd free up to go and enjoy/live life if you just changed your mindset that you don't need someone else or a book to tell you how to be a good person.

I was blessed with the understanding that there is a god
Ever since I was young I believe in a divine power. I don't need miracles to happen, this is what I choose to believe

Easy target?

Target? Yes. Easy? No. Christianity has survived all assaults on its verity and relevance for over 2000 years. And what has been the impact of the millennia of assaults on it?

Christianity has grown from being a minor cult to having more adherents and advocates than any other faith based belief system, nearly double the number of the next largest belief system with some 2.2B believers. (http://www.pewforum.org/2011/12/19/g...stianity-exec/)

All the best.

It is the easy target because you don't have to worry about a violent reaction or shouts of "racist!!!" if you criticize Christianity.

So yea, easy target.

This is where most atheists lose me.

Looks like the third largest population is 'unaffiliated' at 1.1B.

Good idea, but most people likely think they are acting as a "good person," when you or I or others might strongly disagree. Some people might think they are "good" when they steal from one person to give to another - would you agree? Or think that euthanizing mentally deficient people is "doing good" - would you agree? These are rhetorical questions, of course - the point is, without an objective measure or rule book of what constitutes "good," your theory can't work. Please understand I don't mean to be disrespectful of your post.

IMO most religions and esp Judeo-Christian are basically all about maintaining control of a civilization using 'laws' wrapped up in mysticism to give them credibility. All religions are like this.

The are a great many books/videos on the subject by people such as Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, Daniel Dennett, etc.

I think there's an evolutionary argument to be made for it. Doesn't matter whether it's a religion of a 'god(s)', state sponsored (ex, Church of England), or a religion of The State (Communism, Facism)

Agree that Communism and Facism are administered just like religions.

People in general have the desire and propensity to control and/or be controlled - it's not based in religion. Much good has also been done in the name of religion - no one can discount that. In fact, concepts like the Rule of Law and individual rights come from the Bible.

Nor can one deny the horror and destruction carried out in the name of the Judeo-Christian God.
