Report: BMW resurrecting 6 Series and axing future XM generation

BMW to revive 6 Series; electric XM crossover scrapped
BMW plans to resurrect an old nameplate as it consolidates its lineup of gasoline-powered coupes and convertibles.

The German automaker will revive the 6 Series in the U.S. after it was ditched in 2019, according to a supply-chain industry source who requested not to be identified while sharing future product plans.

The midsize 6 Series will be launched as a coupe and convertible in the second half of 2026. It will be based on BMW's Cluster Architecture platform and support gasoline, gasoline-electric hybrid and electric powertrains. Volumes are expected to be small.

Electrification drive
The 6 Series will launch as BMW discontinues the 8 Series and 4 Series with combustion engines.

AutoForecast Solutions Vice President Sam Fiorani said several traditional gasoline models will disappear as BMW aims for EVs to make up half of all brand sales by 2030.

End of the road
At the top of the lineup, BMW plans to eventually drop the high-performance XM plug-in hybrid crossover that arrived in U.S. stores early last year.

According to a supply chain analyst, BMW has also scrapped plans for an all-electric XM. Production of the emissions-free XM, codenamed G79, was to begin at BMW's Spartanburg, S.C., factory in late 2028.

Hopefully they burn all the XMs so nobody has to suffer through seeing them.

BMW never should have renamed the 6 to the 8. That was just a stupid marketing gimmick.

Discontinuing any models using combustion engines is a recipe for disaster. The market isn't ready or isn't interested in switching any time soon. PHEV, sure. But fully battery I don't think the market is gonna support.

And nothing of value was lost.

Seriously wtf was the point of the xm? It was less luxurious than the x7, less performant than the x5, and wasn’t efficient or sporty. And stupid expensive.

How about you just make a hybrid m version of the x5 and x7? And an m version of the ix?

The 6 has always been the 8 and vice-versa, so not surprised this was the choice for the post-8 lifecycle. I’m more concerned with them calling the XM a crossover, have they seen that thing in person? It’s a tank 😂

Things like this XM cancellation show the silver lining that there’s still someone left at BMW who knows what’s going on. Good riddance to that pig

To date I’ve only seen 1 XM on the road. I was hoping they’d be a flop so I could get one for cheap, but they are somehow still mega expensive.

Maybe it truly was just a test bed for the M5. Kind of like the X3M was the test bed for the M3 motor.

Hopefully there is a ICE S58 M6!! (Being realistic as the V8 days are numbered).

6 series making a come back has been rumored for at least 2 years, as the 8 series writing was on the wall to see the chopping block when the coupe and convertible skipped a model year. However, BMW AG still wanted to move the product line further up scale with the XM ‘hearse’. An other R&D flop, as you would have thought that BMW AG learned about what the market will pay for with the 8 series using inferior plastic parts. So much for M lounge rear seat marketing for the XM.

Will be sad to see the 4 series coupe and cabrio go, but at least there will still be a coupe and convertible offering.

I will tell you what the point of the XM is, as an XM owner.
It's a big, efficinet, fast luxury SUV. It's the only current M car that is as efficient as a diesel X5 on long road trips. You buy it either because you want an efficient M car and you have a big family, or for the same reason someone would buy a G class for. The XM is not comparable to an X7, it's like comparing a 318i to an M3 competition.

Yes, the 8 series will remain as the Gran Coupe 4 door for the next generation.

How is the XM a “fast luxury SUV”, when the reported 0-60 time is 4.1 sec? The X5 M60 had a C&D tested 0-60 of 3.6 sec. The XM is neither efficient as with the weight I’m sure a owner is going through tires a lot more frequently than a ICE M.

Why so much hate on the XM?

We, XM owners really enjoy the car. It's super big, the interior is top BMW, it has all the tech, it's super fast, it handles exceptionally because of all the M upgrades like active anti roll bars, Limited slip differential, spring suspension, M5 bushings etc. It's also super efficient, I got 24mpg on a 600mile road trip

Everyone looks at the car, everyone moves out the way on highways, kids record and take pictures and wave at you, people come up to me at gas stations to tell me how nice it looks. It really is a statement car, it has the most aura out of all BMWs.

It really does everything.
Theres no other car that can do what the XM does, maybe the Urus SE, but it's 150,000$ more
and smaller.

It's also the best sounding S68 car from factory

The XM is excellent, you either have to be ignorant, a hater or simply stupid to not appreciate it

Has this been proven? Hybrids typically have little efficiency gains over gas ICE in highway testing, and this is where diesel absolutely shines. Range, too.

Well the British Goverment did sink all the Deloreans during that debacle. Maybe we can lure the xMs together on a ship and sink it
