So since early January I’ve been doing Uber/Lyft full time. To keep miles off of the 335i I purchased a 2013 Civic EX from Carmax about 4 weeks ago, along with the Maxcare plan for up to 100k miles (currently has 22k).

I average about $15 in gas daily (5 days a week) plus I work Friday nights ($10 max). Tolls are covered and I average about 120 miles per day. I pull in about $1-1.2k per week so take away the fuel, wear/tear, etc... maybe $750-$800? I know I could be way off here. The Civic is just used for this so depreciation isn’t making me lose sleep at night. These Honda’s are reliable af so I’m confident it’ll last another year or two of doing this until I figure out my next move.

The plan is to incorporate myself/tax ID by next month. I may need to consult a tax expert on this so if anyone is, please PM me.

Does it suck to get a good fare with a long ride to a location where there are probably no return trips? For example, if you get a fare from South Miami to Weston, is that good or bad?

I have been fortunate so far on this topic, except for yesterday. Started out where I live on the Kendall/Pinecrest border and wound up in Broward and then out in the ‘sticks’ at Lake Worth. I did manage to get trips back to northern Broward but then I met my daily goal and just drove straight home.

Good for you for tipping for excellent service. My Uber rating is at a 4.96 which I was told by an Uber exec that I gave a ride a few weeks ago was one of the highest around. Not sure if I believe that or if true, however, I do use Uber as a passenger from time to time and I see ratings from other drivers from 4.72 all the way to 4.87 so I must be doing something right.

I get tips on a good basis, both cash and on the apps.

Seemed like a good deal for the person driving us to dinner, but not so much for the person taking us home. No fares out of Wellington at 11pm. It was a good fare, I tipped him $10 and he never hinted it was a problem, but I still wondered if it sucked for him.

I’ve felt like that before one Friday night. Request in Brickell and dropped off in West Boca. Immediately got a request that took me to Broward and then another back to Brickell. You’d be surprised with the amount of people looking to move around late at night/early morning.

This week I began starting at 1:30-2am and it’s better than starting at 4am. I’ve already made my goal for the day so as of now I’m chillin’ like Nate McMillan.

I had some guy offer me cocaine on the spot at his drop off point. I was like WTF but then again, because Miami. As for sex, no but have been hit on a few times. Matter of fact, some young Latina (drunk) this past Friday night said I was the hottest driver she ever had calling my name out loud when she got in the car. Now Lups can vouch that I am indeed fugly so she was just trying to be nice. All I care about are those 5 stars dammit!

As far as danger, I try to be alert like Jason Bourne of my surroundings, especially at night. A Lyft driver here in Miami was shot in the back four (4) times last month and survived.

Longest trip was maybe 55 miles IIRC. Time wise about an hour and 30 minutes because of retarded traffic.

Yesterday morning was my first encounter with vomit while doing this. College kid from The U threw up as he was sitting in the front passenger seat. He managed to keep 75% of it on him but the other half (Yogi quote) ended up all over the passenger area. I kept my cool as I knew Uber would give me $150 and they did just that last night. Gave barf boy 3 stars and it took me about an hour to clean all that up as soon as I dropped him off. A few times I almost vomited from the smell haha.

Odd requests, non really to this point.

My rating was 4.75 but dipped to 4.15. I don't slam doors. I am always on time at the pick up point. Never make a mess or eat in a car.

I have had some good conversations. Nothing racist or inappropriate.

I swear I am going to stop tipping if drivers are going to knock my rating.

Any advice appreciated.

I always give passengers 5 stars except for three of them:

A. Barf boy
2. A girl who was being an annoying back seatbdriver got 3 stars
D. A woman who complained that I didn’t take the first left when I took the 2nd. I mean getting all bent outta shape over that? I gave her 3 stars and I could tell she gave me 3 as well.

Most drivers I have encountered have been friendly and I have given them 5 stars. The only advise I can give you is if you slip something along these lines, “5 stars for you bud/ma’am”. I’ll guarantee it’ll go up.

This is interesting, thanks for posting up. My son contemplated driving for Uber when he was unemployed recently. I disliked the idea, mostly because he drives a Volvo S60R and I was concerned that the overhead would eat him alive. But also I worried a bit about his safety.

So to my question: even with your Bourne-ish skillz, do you have concerns about your safety? If so, what steps do you take in that regard?
