How much do you spend on gas a month?
So I've been thinking and coming to realization that I'm spending roughly 13% of my paycheck just in gas alone a month. I've been thinking lately how much is too much?
I'm spending $280 a month. every 4 days I need gas. So that's once to twice a week. I drive 60 miles to work everyday. If my Z4 gets 28 mpg one would think hey thats not right. But I'm going 80 and passing people at the same time. The whole reason behind this discussion is I was thinking about trying to find something closer to home possibly. But the only issue with that is there is not a lot of work where I live (unless you like retail). I do have a pretty good job. I just worry about the drive everyday. I hate driving I4. I could use my GI Bill and go back to school, but in the past that has proven less than satisfying. But hey I've also grown a lot in the past 5.5 years I was in the Army. |

That's actually not that bad, but you should be spending less than 5% on gas imo. I drive 15 miles round trip everyday and I got to fill up every 5 days(usually fill up at 1/4 tank). Avg around 15mpg right now. $40 every fill up which is about $240-50 ish a month.

I fill about once a week for $60 so around $240 a month. I daily my car to work which is a 30 mile round trip M-F. In terms of %, I think that's not too bad.

At most $25 a month... I walk to work... whilst I watch all of my coworkers fight with Miami traffic, spend more on gas and car maintenance to live further and pay nearly the same amounts on rent... living close to work is imho a priority... not sure how anyone else can see it any other way. Even if you have a house further, you should still have a job that is closer to your living space... the amount of time and money that I see people waste on driving and sitting in traffic is out of any logical reason.

Kudos for going right to 'new job' instead of 'new car'. That dedication and good judgment should be worth a promotion in the ranking system.
And I'd put in a vote for using those GI benefits - or just check out current opportunities - lots of federal agencies have a Veteran hiring preference - in the VA there are many positions that don't even get posted to civilians if they can find Veterans to fill them. As they say, the answer to your job problems is also at the end of your arm https://www.usajobs.gov/ |

I fill about $120 a week. My X5 is guzzling gas and ranges usually 230~240 miles per tank.

Good idea to do the math. I was driving 160+ miles/day in an STi a few years back; filled that damned car once every 2 days. I did the math and found out that I could buy a brand new Honda Fit and the gas savings would pay for the car -- but not insurance or maintenance. I still bought it, and retired the STi to fun drive duty.
Moral of story: do the math. While doing the math, remember that there is more to transportation costs than just gas. In fact gas is a small fraction of the cost per mile. |

I hate to get into money and what not but lets just say i bring 1800 a month after taxes. The flip side to this coin is I get disability from the VA. I get about the same amount (I can work and where I work is very veteran and disabled veteran friendly) in disability that I bring home after taxes.
I try not to take into account the disability portion when doing the math here because it does not directly correlate with the income from the job I have the amount spent on gas. Yes I know that it's not just gas, but tires, maintenance, oil etc. I just don't know. It's a great company and I have a pretty good job just the drive to and from work kills me sometimes when I think about it. I might be able to make the same amount going to school, but that is almost just as stressful. |
