I remember seeing one in a showroom beside a new 'Vette. Both were well under $10k. They were still the most expensive cars in the place, though.

I worked as a mechanic in a dealership that sold those. Piece of junk. My favorite 'feature' was the leaky hydraulic rams overhead that worked the gullwing doors. Nothing like a little hydraulic fluid dripping on your hot date's dress to spice up the evening.

Despite it being a pile, it still has a loyal following.

When I bought my R1200 GS, I bought it from a service member who'd recently come back from Germany. He was having difficulty selling it since it was a military sales overseas purchase and then shipped to the US-- the paperwork was a *nightmare*. But, since I knew how to get it licensed/registered (I'm retired Military), I made him a fair offer and he accepted.

I flew out to Tucson and he picked me up at the airport. We went over to his place to pick up the bike. While we were driving to his house, I was chatting with him about why he was selling an almost brand-new bike with only 700 miles on it.

His answer was that his wife was pregnant, and she put down the law that he was only able to have one "toy". He opened up the garage, and there was a classic right-hand drive Skyline GTR sitting next to the bike.

It was a "WTF, over?" moment. I was boggled that he had one, since they're just about impossible to import to the US. He said that it was just barely 25 years old, so he was able to bring it into the country. He'd found it in Germany (and don't ask me how a Japan-spec GTR made it there), bought it, drove it there, and then delayed his return to the US until the car went over 25 years, so he could have the Government ship it back for him.

Sometimes it helps to know the rules well enough to take advantage of them. And I got a great bike out of the deal!

R.

When we lived in England and I was in high school, my Dad bought a right hand drive, 1979 Mazda RX-7 Savanna. It had been imported directly from Japan by my friend's father and was the only one ('79 model year) in the U.K. at the time.

Here is a link with info about that car (our car looked exactly like this):

https://www.supercars.net/blog/1979%...avanna-series/

It was so cool! I loved how the side view mirrors were mounted above the front wheel fenders, instead of on the doors.

Anyways, my Dad ended up bringing this car to the U.S. where he gave it to my sister, who drove it during her college years at SCAD in Savannah. Ultimately, it was sold to my cousin who lived in Canada and after a few years (we're now well into the early 90s) he sold it. After that, I lost track of it. But it was so cool!

Always remember that the Japanese are in love with the USA, so the owner probably had it converted to be different, then sold it, and it ended up here in the USA. It happens more often than you think.

For sure. I imagine that car with wider tires and the fenders moved out just enough to accommodate everything at -1.5° instead of 4° with skinnys.

The '61 Tempest also was available with Buick's amazing little, lightweight 215 V8 with all aluminum block and cylinder heads. It wasn't the first aluminum ICE. That goes to Benz way back in the early 1900s. But, the little Buick engine was one of the first aluminum engines in production in large quantities. My mom had a '62 Buick Special with that amazing engine. What a great car it was.
