Several PPL Dead At FIU Bridge Collapse

This hits so close to home, maybe 4 miles from where I live. Terrible.

I did one semester of graduate school at FIU many years ago. That is very sad to see.

Tell me more,

Why not use a metal arch bridge, relative light weight. Does a walkway need to be 100 Tons ? A cement beam bridge seems so heavy - I guess wheel chair accessible and hurricane resistant dictate the design.

I haven't been in the immediate area in years but not sure I understand why a bridge like this is necessary at all. There are some busy / wide streets near campus but that's the way it is all over Miami. UM students have been crossing US 1 without a bridge for decades.

Because it needs to stand up to a Category 5 Hurricane.

So apparently the engineering company that designed this bridge also designed the replacement for the 35w bridge here that collapsed 10 years ago and killed 13 people...

Didn't they release a statement today that in 40 years they have not had any failures...thought I heard something to that effect on CNN.

Yea they did, but it gives me less faith in the fact that they designed the bridge that replaced our collapsed one.

It was sad that the university was so proud of how they've revolutionize the way to build bridges. I hope they learn from this tragedy.

For those asking why FIU was building a bridge across that intersection, here's why:

Sounds like it could have been much, much worse. The bridge wasn't yet open to pedestrians and the school is on Spring break this week.

Still tragic.

I am local and was aware of that accident. Unfortunately there are multiple such fatalities in FL every year.

All I'm saying is multiple news outlets reported the catalyst for building this bridge was that unfortunate death last year.

Definitely close to heart as i earned one of my degrees from FIU.

Also Miami-Dade has one of the strictest buildings codes in all of the US. Requiring all buildings to be able to withstand Category 5 winds. So I'm a bit amazed and assume it has to be a building error and not a engineering standpoint.

I don't see a center support beam on that. They easily could have put one in the median...

I mean there are also not to speed... but have you driven close to downtown miami? 99% chance this is gross negligence on someone's part... the area has an aura of indifference to almost anything.

It has been reported that the bridge cables were being tightened when the bridge collapsed as they were loose.

That was tweeted by Marco Rubio as being "overheard when touring the scene."

What legal professional in their right mind would think it is a good idea to tweet hearsay from a major catastrophe like that.

Whether the info is true or not, to pop that out to the media and not allow the investigators to complete their due diligence is moronic.

I'm not an engineer, so I don't know shit about building bridges, but if the cables are loose, why the hell did they open it to people?

The cables might have been 'loose' as part of the design (ie for heat expansion, sway compression or some other reason), or they might have been installed incorrectly.

The bridge was still under construction and not yet open to the public AFAIK.

My fault, I thought I heard people were on the bridge.
