.gif in signature

why are we allowed to put .gif animations in signatures? all it does is slow down the site, and every time i try to use the forum my browser crashed from it trying to load 30 thousand .gif's

You can hide signatures via the UserCP. Go to 'Edit Options' and then uncheck 'Show Signatures' under 'Thread Display Options'.
