Hobbies?

Okay, in light of all the extracurricular crabbiness we've been spreading as the holidays are approaching, how about a thread to make us more human. Tell us what you like to do in your spare time, for you (not for your kids or S.O - It's okay to be selfish :smile.

Mine are:

Autocross (I'm a junkie)
Track
Woodworking
Tinkering on cars
Travel
Video Games (anybody else 360? GHII & III and Rockband rule!)

What are all of your vices? (Hint: Bong hits are not a hobby)

Here's a partial list:
  • Reading - I'm an absolutely omnivorous reader, got a pertty large personal library and access to two decent large public library systems
  • Watching racing - live as much as possible - and again omnivorous, sports car racing (ALMS), F1, IRL, dirt track 'topless' sprinters, vintage - The racing bug has not bitten me thank goodness - the old salt is, "How do you make a small fortune racing? Start with a large fortune." ; -)
  • Music - live as much as possible, genreally oldies (pre-baroque), chamber music, jazz (I gave up on rock when 'glam' hit the scene ; -)
  • Travel - anywhere west of Limon, CO is high on the list - 'Blue Highways' too, and I keep the passport up to date (just in case they come for me ; -)

4) High-end analog stereo

Hugo,
We have a common interest - real music, in particular, Beethoven's string quartets.

BMWeber,
I have been machining for over 30 years, have a small shop at home to produce model parts. Even had an aftermarket company for some time. Check it out...

Exactly where I'm stuck too.

I have easy and medium done with 5 stars/perfects though. I need to go back through the hards to get better, and I think dragonforce will be a snap by then.

I haven't really tried Rockband yet, other than a couple songs and to make sure the hardware works. I want to get through hard. On GHII, I'm a couple groups into the expert songs. I think GHIII is a a couple notches harder than GHII.

Nice mill! I wouldn't be able to commandeer the garage, but I do have my woodshop in the cellar. I pretty much do colonial reproductions, but I've gone through Shaker and Arts and Crafts (predominantly Stickley) repoduction phases too.

Our house is a hodge-podge as you walk from room to room. The Livingroom is all quarter-sawn mission oak furniture (complete with a couple Morris chairs), my bedroom is cherry Shaker, the family room/home theatre is colonial repro (spalted, birds-eye, or tiger maple).... Luckily, none of the rooms are adjacent to each other.

Surname, do you have a 3 phase service coming into the house, or did you have the motors replaced/rewired to single phase? I assume you have something more than a 200A service too? Most Bridgeports that I've seen are on a dedicated 3 phase 40A circuit, which is well over what a normal house service would be able to provide.

Hi Larry,

The shop runs off a solid-state phase convertor, two 110 legs in, pseudo-three out, 15A circuit.

Reading- serious book buyer. I like fiction and non-fiction- recent purchases incl., Young Stalin- the guy was a bank robber, extortionist, petty criminal, womanizer, poet (!) before he went on to bigger things like genocide and plans for world domination.

Travel- it opens your head and keeps you loose.

Music- Jazz (mid-60's Blue Note), Classical, Rock...Stones to TV on the Radio.

Art and Design...I make it, I teach it, I buy it: - usually the only thing I can afford is emerging artists and I love American Primitive and contemporary furniture-
the Dutch design firm Montis puts out relatively affordable furniture that I pick-up in mark-down sales.

There's another work on Stalin I read earlier this year or last, "Koba the Dread" - well worth the read.
