would be neat to see an HDR of that structure with the rust on it just to see what happens.

Just noticed...I'll be in your neck of the woods next Friday. Spending the night in Suffolk on my way down to OBX.

Haven't surfed in 2 years now...

so while we are still on the bokeh topic... was thinking of upgrading my 50mm 1.4 to a 50mm 1.2L. any thoughts? my other thought was to keep the 1.4 and add an 85mm 1.8 to my bag but one of my professors said if I have a 70-200mm 2.8 the upgrade on the 50mm would make more sense.

any thoughts for either argument?

The 50L is a solid lens. better build, better out of focus thingies, better contrast. Definitely go for it.

Go for it (the 1.2)! Just make sure you get a good copy, some of them have been known to have back focus issues. I went through a few copies so I know what it's like, so personally, I didn't trust it's consistency since it it would be great at times and not so in other conditions. Maybe sending it in for calibration by Canon would help fix that.

i've heard some people have trouble focusing the 1.2...

and about the 85mm
I was talking to a pro yesterday and he primarily shoots the 85 1.8 and 135 2, and that's all he uses professionally for portraits.

I've heard good things about the 50mm f/1.2L, but those who have it seems to complain that it probably wasn't worth the huge price difference between the f/1.4 (unless you need the build quality for extreme weather shooting).

right and that makes sense but I don't do that many standard portraits and when I do I like my 50mm better than my 70-200
