Amazing or Hard to Believe Geographic Facts
We who are from the United States are often teased, and rightly so, about our general lack of knowledge about geography. I find geography fascinating and while I am still dumb as a brick about the topic, I do try to learn new things and get better at knowing the geographic world.
There are so many fun facts about geography that hard to believe. I'll start with three: 1) The Earth is round, not flat. Kidding, everybody knows that! 2) Los Angeles, CA is further east than Reno, Nevada. 3) The northernmost point of Brazil is closer to Canada than it is to the southernmost part of Brazil. Here's an image to support #3. What fascinating fun facts do you have about geography? Share away. Last edited by sygazelle; 11-13-2023 at 10:41 AM.. |

That size of continents on the maps we are use to seeing are not accurate. I forgot where I read this but it had something to do with how the map gets distorted when you try showing a spherical object on a 2D paper. They have maps that specifically adjust for this and are suppose to show the true

London, UK is further north in latitude than any point in the lower 48 states of the USA.
If you want to geek out, check out this web page about visiting the Northwest Angle that's cut off from Minnesota: https://amateurtraveler.com/the-nort...-in-minnesota/

I moved from the most densely-populated place on Earth (Hong Kong) to the most sparse (Canada) (Disclaimer: roughly-speaking more or less, don't break out your protractors on me, geography nerds! LOL.)
The tallest place in the world (Mt Everest) can easily fit inside the deepest place in the world (Mariana Trench) w room to spare.

Mt. Thor on Baffin Island, Canada, has Earth’s greatest sheer vertical drop (4,101 feet).
You can take one step off the peak and fall nearly a mile before you hit anything. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Thor |

The Largest concentration of lakes is in Canada, with Over 879,000 lakes.
Second by size but first with the number of lakes, Canada outmatches every other nation with the number of lakes it has. A survey found that Canada has the most lakes per square kilometer in the entire world. Canada is home to an astounding 62% of the 1.42 million lakes globally, with a size greater than 0.1 square kilometers. |

The Diomede Islands
Time zones can be strange and create strange situations. The Diomede Islands are only separated by 4 km (2.4 mi), yet due to the International Date Line running across them, they are not only in different time zones but also 20 hours apart. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diomede_Islands |
